INDIANAPOLIS -- The faces told the story in the post-fight news conference. There was hardly a mark on Carlos (The Natural Born Killer) Condit other than a small abrasion around his right eye. Martin (The Hitman) Kampmanns face looked like someone had taken a giant can-opener to it, with fresh stitches peaking out below and above the chunky sunglasses wrapped around his shaved head. A trickle of blood glistened from the stitches below his right eye as the news conference wore on. The only discomfort Condit showed was an occasional wince as he flexed his hand -- probably from overuse. According to FightMetric, the sixth-ranked Kampmann led 6-0 in takedowns but Condit had a huge 100-35 edge in significant strikes. And by the time referee Herb Dean stepped in 54 seconds into the fourth round, Condits surgical strikes had broken Kampmann and left his face a bloody mask with a gash below his eye and another on his forehead above the bridge of his nose. Wednesdays win at Bankers Life Fieldhouse reaffirmed the second-ranked Condits perch high among UFC welterweight contenders after back-to-back losses to champion Georges St-Pierre of Montreal and No. 1 contender Johny (Bigg Rigg) Hendricks. GSP and Hendricks square off at UFC 167 in November. No. 3 Rory (Ares) MaDonald, a native of Kelowna, B.C., who fights out of Montreal, meets No. 9 (Ruthless) Robbie Lawler on the same Las Vegas card. While St-Pierre has held the 170-pound title since April 2008, making eight straight title defences, the welterweight division is beginning to look a little more than just GSPs personal playground these days. Once it looked like St-Pierre had cleaned out the decision. Now the top 10 is looking more vibrant. GSP is still the top dog but the division is showing signs of life. Condit (29-7) remains a threat -- a durable, smart, evolving fighter who is working on closing the few chinks in his armour. "Hes one of the best in the world," said UFC president Dana White. Former Strikeforce welterweight champion Tarec (Sponge) Saffiedine, the No. 8 contender forced to drop out of a July bout with Lawler due to injury, has said he wants to meet the Condit-Kampmann winner. No. 4 Demian Maia, a jiu-jitsu ace who is 3-0 since dropping down to 170 pounds, is due to meet former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields, a top grappler himself, in October. Matt (The Immortal) Brown has turned heads recently, entering the rankings at No. 10 after his sixth straight win. White said Wednesday that he has a bout for the hard-nosed Brown in mind but wouldnt say more other than "its a perfect fight for him." No. 7 Nick Diaz remains on the sidelines but his retirement after a loss to a March loss to St-Pierre -- which followed a defeat at the hands of Condit -- may be temporary. No. 5 Jake (The Juggernaut) Ellenberger has some work to do in the wake of a disappointing performance in a loss to MacDonald in July. Outside the top 10 lurks Tyron (The Chosen One) Woodley, who is due to face veteran Josh Koscheck at UFC 167 next. And Brandon (Rukus) Thatch turned heads in his UFC debut Wednesday, posting his 10th first-round win. Unbeaten Kelvin Gastelum, winner of Season 17 of "The Ultimate Fighter" as a middleweight, also looked sharp in his first outing at welterweight. The pretenders to the crown still face a stiff task in trying to dethrone the 32-year-old St-Pierre, who has won 11 straight since an April 2007 loss to Matt (The Terror) Serra -- a defeat avenged a year later when GSP reclaimed his title. The Canadian leads the UFC in significant strikes (1,153), total strikes landed (2,398), takedowns landed (84) and takedown accuracy (75 per cent). His career fight time (five hours three minutes 12 seconds) ranks second to B.J. Penn by just 39 seconds. St-Pierre, a dead-cert future Hall of Famer, is also third in significant strike defence (75.1 per cent). With a team of elite coaches led by Firas Zahabi and a work ethic second to none, St-Pierre is still a force to be reckoned with as long as his hunger remains. Living with a target on your back for more than five years isnt easy, especially in a sport that demands so much gruelling training between fights. Next up for St-Pierre is Hendricks, a former NCAA champion wrestler with a sledgehammer for a left hand. While St-Pierre and his team craft game plans to blunt their opponents strengths and allow the champion to control the fight, Hendricks breaks people with his heavy hand. His 10-1 UFC resume includes finishes of 12, 29, 40 and 46 seconds. Still, Condit picks St-Pierre to win in November. "Hendricks is obviously a very dangerous guy, he can end the fight with one punch," said Condit, a former WEC and interim UFC champion. "But I think Georges St-Pierre is too technical and also Hendricks has shown that he fades towards the end of the third (round). Now hes got two extra rounds to go. I think Georges is going to probably take control towards the end of the fight and come out on top." As for Condits future, he said he was leaning towards a rematch with Hendricks as his preferred next challenge "just because our fight was so close." There was only pain for Kampmann (20-7). Hampered by slow starts in some previous fights, the Las Vegas-based Dane came out like a rocket and gassed out in the second round. White wondered about Kampmanns strategy, asking why he didnt vary his tactics after landing four takedowns in the first round. "I said Whens he going to let his hands go? Hes one of the best strikers in the business. And now hes already got Carlos worried about the takedowns. Why not throw some punches?" White asked. Its back to the drawing board for Kampmann, knocked out in 46 seconds by Hendricks last November. A well-rounded, quality fighter, he has stumbled in the face of elite opposition. Condit, he agreed, was the better man Wednesday. "I think I solidified myself as a contender," said Condit when asked where he thought he stood in the division after Wednesdays win. "Im still maybe a fight away from another title shot, I hope." UFC 167 will play out the next piece of the welterweight puzzle. NOTES -- Part of the upper deck at Bankers Life Fieldhouse was curtained off, an apparent acceptance of the difficulties in staging a televised show on a Wednesday night. The show drew a modest 5,950, down from the 15,811 that attended the UFC 119 pay-per-view show at the same venue in September 2010. After going up by as many as 12 in the second quarter, the Nuggets started the third with a 16-6 run powered by Lawson. The shake-up also could help the team owner win his second Rolex 24 at Daytona.Ozz Negri put the No. 60 Ligier JS P2 Honda on the pole for the twice-round-the-clock endurance race that begins Saturday at Daytona International Speedway. Negris fast run continued a streak of domination the Shank team has had all week: In five on-track sessions, the team has led the speed chart. Its given the team a sense of hope that, barring reliability issues, the lineup of Negri, John Pew, AJ Allmendinger and 17-year-old newcomer Matt McMurry could collect brand new Rolex watches Sunday. When you look at opportunity, theres been none better for us, Shank said Friday. Theyve got to understand that opportunities like this dont come along very often. Weve had it twice in 11 years that I felt like we could really, really win.Shank didnt know if hed be in this position when he overhauled the program by leaving Ford and the DP Riley the organization had used since 2008.He did it in anticipation of rule changes IMSA is expected to make for the sports car series in 2017, and because switching into a P2 from a Daytona Prototype put him in a car that meets Le Mans specifications.I needed to make a move for my business, this is all I do for a living, and I needed to try to figure out where we want to place ourselves the next five years, Shank said. And, we needed a change. We were just not consistently competitive enough where we were. But the change was expensive, and Shank had to offset some of those costs by signing McMurry, a high school junior who made his Le Mans debut last year. The move came at the expense of IndyCar driver Justin Wilson, who was part of a lineup that had been unchanged since 2012 when Shank won his first Rolex 24.The team owner said it crushes me to not have Wilson participating. He even considered using Wilson as a fifth driver, but driver size differences and the adjusstment to the Ligier made it too difficult.dddddddddddd.The flipside is that McMurry made Shank commercially successful, and the car is sold out of sponsorship races for the Rolex and Sebring.Allmendinger recognizes the team will have a speed drop-off from Wilson to McMurry, but the teenager who has to do homework between practice sessions only needs to race smart for the team to be successful. You just need to know your role, go out there and not make mistakes and keep the car on the race track and keep it out of trouble, Allmendinger said. The speed in the Shank entry has gotten the attention of the paddock, which considers the No. 60 one of the cars to beat.Of course, the competition is stiff and Chip Ganassis two entries have been right behind Shank in every session. For now, the No. 02 Ford EcoBoost BP entry commonly known as the star car has been more consistent. Three-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon will open and close the race for that team, which includes Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan, Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray and Sprint Cup Series rookie of the year Kyle Larson.I was out to lunch last year, said Larson, who was admittedly nervous about making mistakes before his Rolex debut and then made several in his first stint. Im way faster than I was last year, a lot more consistent. Well see how the race goes, but I think I should be more competitive than I was last year. The No. 01 is headed by Scott Pruett, who will be seeking a record sixth win that will move him past Hurley Haywoods record. Hes driving with new full-time teammate Joey Hand, and IndyCar drivers Charlie Kimball and Sage Karam. Pruetts all-American team has won three Rolexs since the Dixon-led No. 02 last won in 2006.Also expected to be in the mix is defending race winner Action Express Racing, which also won in 2010, and returned last years winning lineup of Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi and IndyCars Sebastien Bourdais. And, Wayne Taylor Racing is hoping to improve on consecutive runner-up finishes and earn its first win since 2005, when team owner Taylor was driving. The team now includes both of his sons, Jordan and Ricky, and longtime Taylor driver Max Angelelli. ' ' '
The International Olympic Committee is reprimanding athletes for wearing items commemorating the dead. IOC spokesman Mark Adams said Monday the Olympic body sent a letter to the Norwegian Olympic Committee after its female cross-country skiers wore black armbands Saturday in honor of a teammates brother, who died on the eve of the Sochi Games. Adams did not give details of the IOC letter, saying that was "the end of the matter." In other disciplines, the IOC banned helmet stickers in tribute to Canadian halfpipe skier Sarah Burke, who died after a crash in training two years ago. Adams said athletes should find "a better place" to express their grief. Australian snowboarder Torah Bright said in an Instagram post on Friday that the IOC has banned competitors from wearing stickers on their gear. The IOC considered it to be a "political protest," Bright wrote. The IOC has strict rules against protests or propaganda during competitions, outlawing any demonstrations in Olympic venues. Although a commemoration of a dead athlete can hardly be considered a political protest, the IOCs tough stance is often explained by fears that allowing someone to display non-Games-related messages on the gear would encourage others to use the games for their own gain. The Dallas forwards scored in a shootout in their first game in Boston since the Stanley Cup finals to lift the Stars to a 3-2 win over the slumping Bruins on Tuesday night. "I have to say its a special game," Seguin said. "I knew where this was on the calendar. I knew my first time in Boston." Bruins coach Claude Julien brushed off a question about whether the loss hurt more because Seguin and Peverley played such big roles. "I dont care about that. Give it a break," he said. "Im mad because we lost." Seguin scored on Dallas second shot, tying the shootout 1-1 after Patrice Bergeron scored on Bostons first attempt. Then Peverley put the puck through Tuukka Rasks pads on the Stars fourth and final shot. "I think I was more nervous for this game than I was for any of the Stanley Cup finals," Peverley said. "It was emotional for me, but it was fun to be here." The Bruins lost those finals in six games to the Chicago Blackhawks. Now they have lost four of five games after winning four in a row. "The first 10 minutes were good and then we got back to some of our old habits," Julien said. "Eventually, when you play that way, you find ways to lose hockey games, and thats what were doing right now." It was the second straight shootout win for the Stars. On Sunday, Jamie Benn scored the winner in a 4-3 victory over Ottawa. Vernon Fiddler tied the game for Dallas on a penalty shot with 2:34 left in the third period after he was tripped from behind by Dennis Seidenberg. It erased a lead Boston took with 8:21 remaining when Milan Lucic tipped in Dougie Hamiltons shot from the blue line. The other goals came in the first period with Benn scoring for Dallas at 3:38, and Torey Krug tying it at 4:16. Seguin, the second pick in the 2010 draft, and Peverley were sent to Dallas after last season in a trade thaat brought forwards Loui Eriksson and Reilly Smith to Boston.dddddddddddd Seguin, who leads the Stars in scoring, was booed several times when he touched the puck and was taunted with the chant, "Say-gin, Say-gin." "I am sure that there are mixed feelings out there," he said. "I can only go out there and play hockey." It was the first meeting between the teams since Dec. 31, 2011, when Dallas won 4-2. The clubs hadnt faced off in Boston since Feb. 3, 2011 -- a 6-3 Bruins victory. On the penalty shot that forced overtime, Fiddler skated up the left side, cut across the crease and lifted a backhander into the upper right corner of the net past Rask. Lucics seventh goal matched his total for last season. Stationed in front of the net, with teammate Jarome Iginla and two Stars, Lucic redirected Hamiltons shot past goalie Kari Lehtonen. Eriksson returned after sitting out five games due to a concussion. He missed his shootout attempt on Lehtonen. "Ive been shooting a lot of pucks on him, and hes a great goalie," Eriksson said. "Hes a big goalie, takes up a lot of the net, so you have to find a good shot against him or make a good move, and I didnt, so it was bad." Alex Chiasson missed the next shot for Dallas, and David Krejci failed for Boston. Then Peverley, who was booed when his name was announced as the final shooter, came through. "I knew it was going to be a big night for (Seguin) and Rich both. Sometimes you dont know exactly how theyre going to react to it," Dallas coach Lindy Ruff said. UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Cory Schneider has to make the most of his opportunities to guard the New Jersey Devils net to earn more playing time. It doesnt come easily in a goalie split with Martin Brodeur, but he made a good case for himself in a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday night. Schneider made 30 saves and held off the Islanders late charge to win for the first time since a shutout of Buffalo on Nov. 30. "I want to win, but you cant do it without the guys in front of you," Schneider said. "I thought we played really well tonight, and we eliminated a lot of their odd-man rush opportunities." The 27-year-old goalie held the Islanders scoreless until midway through the third period, before Frans Nielsen tied it 1-1. It didnt stay even for long. With 6:57 to play, Travis Zajac took a shot off his upper body from Marek Zidlicky. The puck deflected past goalie Evgeni Nabokov for the winning goal. In addition to limiting the Islanders odd-man rushes, the Devils capitalized on their own chances. New Jersey took a 1-0 lead with 8:23 remaining in the first period when Adam Henrique beat Nabokov as the trailer on an odd-man rush. "We needed this as a group," Schneider said of the win. "Weve been stringing some points together, which is nice. But we couldnt settle for one. I think we needed the two." New Jersey lost to Columbus at home in a shootout on Friday night. The Islanders absorbed their latest tough home loss. New York hasnt won at Nassau Coliseum in regulation since Nov. 12 -- going 1-5-4 during that span. This loss came without captain John Tavares, who missed the game because of an undisclosed lower-body injury and had his consecutive games streak snapped at 246. He is day to day. Despite Tavaress absence, the Islanders controlled the puck and put heavy pressure on the Devils, particularly in the third period. But Schneider turned aside all but one of their 14 shots. They received a late power play, but couldnt convert -- leaving them 0 for 3 with the advantage during the game. "It was a typical Islanders-Devils game," New York coach Jack Capuano said. "They got the shot and the bounce at the end." The bounce resulted in one of two goals allowed by Nabokov, who played another solid game. Fresh off a shutout victory over Detroit on Monday, the veteran goalie made 23 saves. "Its a process," Capuano said. "(Weve) got to do a better job teaching these kids, and theyre going to go through some growing pains." Jose Mourinhos side started the season brightly with three straight wins but back-to back defeats to rivals Manchester City and Watford and last weekends draw with Stoke have left them down in sixth, five points behind league leaders City.On the other hand, Liverpools title chances have been talked up in recent weeks after a run of four straight victories in the Premier League. And Carragher thinks both sides will be challenging for top spot come the end of the season. It probably feels like that [Liverpool more likely to win title than United] now, because of how Liverpool have started the season, but it was only two or three days ago we were saying it was going to be a shoot-out for the league between United and City, Carragher told Sky Sports News HQ.I still think United will be right up there come the end of the season, the manager has got great experience of winning the Premier League, so I certainly wouldnt write Manchester United off at such an early stage. PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Eagles centre Jason Kelce made it through his third straight day of practice Thursday, making it more likely he will return from a sports hernia injury in this weekends game against the Houston Texans. The centre has been out since having surgery at the end of September. He was cautious Thursday when asked about the possibility of playing.Im not ready to say anything definite yet, Kelce said. Im feeling better, Ill say that. I think were at the point where its not going to get worse by playing.A sports hernia is different than many other football-related injuries, with some unknowns when trying to recover, Kelce said.Theres a pain Im not really used to, Kelce said. Its the type of injury that no matter how hard you work it in the weight room and the training room and everything, theres just certain things in football that put abnormal stresses on your body and are going to tweak it a little bit.Kelce started all 16 games as a rookie in 2011 and all 16 games last year. He missed 14 games in 2012 with a torn ligament in one of his knees. He was a starter this year before hurting himself in the third game against the Washington Redskins.Hes missed the past four games and the Eagles are 2-2 without him.David Molk, an undrafted free agent signed by San Diego in 2012 and who sat out all of 2013, has filled in for Kelce at centre. It takes a little bit of time to work back in there, Eagles offensive co-ordinator Pat Shurmur said of Kelce coming back. Youre certainly working on the things you need to do individually and then getting back working in a group. But theyre pros, theyre veterans, they understand how to deal with injuries and coming back from injuries. So it could be a shorter period of time than it could be for some. The original estimate for Kelces return was the Carolina Panthers game on Nov. 10. If he does make it back this Sunday, he would be a week ahead of schedule.I cant say Im going to be out there and be 100 per cent healthy and not have any issues on Sunday, Kelce said. Because there could be a drastic instance where Im completely off balance and I try to catch myself. Its probably going to be an ongoing thing.Eagles coach Chip Kelly said he will wait until the week ends before making his decision on Kelce.Hes looked good the last couple of days, Kelly said. Well see as we get extended through the week. And then well make a decision on Saturday with him.NOTES: The Eagles had their full squad at Thursdays practice with the exception of safety Nate Allen (hamstring). Allen was on the field for the portion of practice the media is allowed to watch, but was listed as not participating on the official report. Nickel cornerback Brandon Boykin (hamstring) returned after missing Wednesdays practice. Running back Darren Sproles (knee), who missed last Sundays game at Arizona and linebacker Mychal Kendricks (calf), who was limited to 20 plays last week against Arizona, were also practicing. Guard Todd Herremans continued to practice with a torn tricep and wide receiver Brad Smith (groin) also practiced on a limited basis. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice asked the U.S. court earlier this year to subpoena John McCaw Jr., who is based in Seattle, to testify in Toronto. Moores lawyer, Tim Danson, says he hopes McCaw will accept the rulings of the Ontario Superior Court and the United States District Court and appear as ordered at the trial slated to begin in September. Moore is suing Bertuzzi and the Canucks for $38 million for a 2004 on-ice hit that left Moore, then a Colorado Avalanche player, with a concussion and three fractured vertebrae. Danson had argued a jury should be able to hear McCaw answer whether he knew Canucks players were gunning for retaliation against Moore for a hit weeks earlier on former Canucks captain Markus Naslund that resulted inn a concussion.dddddddddddd Bertuzzi has alleged the Canucks then-coach Marc Crawford urged his players to make Moore "pay the price," while Crawford has claimed Bertuzzi disobeyed instructions to get off the ice before Moore was attacked. Danson has said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly have voluntarily agreed to testify. Danson has suggested that McCaw fostered a corporate culture that may have at least implicitly approved such an attack, including having as the president and general manager Brian Burke, who was "unapologetic about promoting violence in hockey." McCaw no longer owns the Canucks, having sold his company Orca Bay, now known as Canucks Sports and Entertainment. But he maintains a "very significant financial interest" in the outcome of the lawsuit, as he is still on the hook for half of any liability found against the team, which Danson said was a condition of the sale. The following year, the team posted a 30-38-14 record and finished last in the Conference. In 2010-11, Wilsons Leafs went 37-34-11 and finished 10th in the Conference. BARCELONA, Spain -- Sevilla beat Granada 4-0 on Sunday to keep the pressure on Athletic Bilbao in their fight for Spains last Champions League berth. Celta Vigo outclassed Almeria with a 4-2 away win as forward Manuel "Nolito" Agudo netted a double, and Paulao scored one goal and set up another, but both for the wrong team, as bottom-side Real Betis slumped to a demoralizing 3-1 defeat at Rayo Vallecano. Granadas defeat at Sevilla was eerily similar to Betis debacle, with its players scoring an own goal and gifting another goal to Kevin Gameiro. Diego Mainz redirected Gameiros pass inside his own post in the 14th, and Gameiro tapped in his 14th league goals this season in the 51st, saving Tiago Delfim from being credited with another own goal after he had pushed the ball toward his empty net. Stephane Mbia and Victor Machin added goals for Sevilla in the 58th and 68th. Sevilla plays Valencia on Thursday in the semifinals of the Europa League. This win provisionally closed the gap with fourth-place Bilbao to three points before the Basques visits Barcelona later. Almerias Rodrigo Rios hit the post in the 10th, but Celta dominated the rest of the game through forwards Nolito, Rafina and Fabian Orellana. Rafina set up the opener when his deflected shot fell to Nolito to score in the 19th. Rios levelled in the 40th, only for Nolito to find Charles to cap a buildup started by Orellana in the 52nd. Another flowing move saw Nolito score from a pass by Orellana in the 71st before Rafina lobbed the ball behind the defence for Orellana to add a fourth four minutes later. Oscar Diaz got Almerias second goal in the 88th but his side remained two points from safety. Celta, meanwhile, climbed into the middle of the standings. "We went out there with the same philosophy we have had all season," said Nolito, referring to coach Luis Enriques attacking style. "We have to celebrate this win because it is a big step toward staying up." Paulaos nightmare began when he left his back pass woefully short of reaching goalkeeper Adan Garrido, letting Rayo forward Rochina Raixes poach the ball and roll it in for the 14th-minute opener. The Brazilian centre back followed that mistake by unfortunately clearing a cross that floated into his own net in the 27th. Paulao immediately asked to be substituted and was replaced five minutes later, with the Rayo fans in Vallecas Stadium politely applauding him to show their support. Rayo, which has surged out of the drop zone to the middle of the table with only one loss in nine rounds, kept the pressure on as Joaquin Larrivey tapped in a rebound in the 52nd before Javier Chica got Betis consolation goal in the 79th. Betis was left on the brink of relegation, 10 points from safety with four games to go. Later, Barcelonas players and coach will be judged by their fans at Camp Nou after returning from three stinging defeats that threaten to leave the Catalan club without a major trophy for the first time since 2007-08. A player drafted from a mediocre crop this week likely wont make an immediate impact. So general manager Peter Chiarelli plans some small changes to improve the team that exited the playoffs earlier than expected. "We had a very good team and, with a little bit of tweaking, I feel well be right back where we were in the past," he said Monday. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2010-11, reached the Cup finals in 2012-13, led the NHL in regular-season points in 2013-14 then eliminated the Detroit Red Wings in a five-game series. But they lost the next round to the Montreal Canadiens in seven games after going up 3-2. Chiarellis big task now is to re-sign Jarome Iginla after he tied for the team lead with 30 goals in his first season with Boston. "Im not going to comment specifically on negotiations," Chiarelli said in a conference call. "Wed like to sign Jarome and thats what I can say. I mean, he has been a valuable player for us. I think there is a good fit." Iginla is one of five Bruins who can become unrestricted free agents when the signing period begins July 1. The others are backup goalie Chad Johnson, defencemen Andrej Meszaros and Corey Potter, both late-season acquisitions, and forward Shawn Thornton, who has been told by Chiarelli he wont be re-signed. "There may be one or two more" among those free agents who he wont re-sign, Chiarelli said. Forward Reilly Smith and defenceman Torey Krug can become restricted free agents. Top free agents from other teams include forwards Marian Gaborik, Thomas Vanek and Paul Stastny. "There are good players available," Chiarelli said. "Were not going to go full force into the free agency. Were probably going to take a step back and look at what may be lesser deals, meaning not high-profile deals, might be available, parrtially due to (salary) cap reasons, partially due to chemistry reasons.dddddddddddd" A few hours later, Chiarelli announced that the Bruins had signed goalie Niklas Svedberg to a one-year contract. He played the only NHL game of his career in a 3-2 overtime win over the Nashville Predators on Jan. 2. With the Bruins AHL team in Providence last season, he was 25-15-4 with a 2.63 goals-against average. He had 37 wins for Providence the previous season. The Bruins have the 25th pick in the two-day draft starting Friday in Philadelphia. With four solid lines, a capable defence and young players bidding for playing time, any players drafted arent likely to help the Bruins next season. The draft "is generally considered, and I would agree, a thinner draft," Chiarelli said. "So there is not as much value, relatively speaking, placed in these picks. So teams will probably be more apt to move those picks around" through trades. Thornton spent seven seasons with the Bruins, providing toughness and leadership. He might not be the only player to leave who is part of the teams successful veteran core. "The decision on Shawn was a very hard one. Hes been here and part of this group for a long time and that would apply to all these guys who have been here and who have given us good service and that have been part of winning teams and Cup-winning teams," Chiarelli said. "So there will be hard choices, but it may be that we dont make hard choices and we keep as many people as we can and we go into the year and maybe we do make those hard choices as the year progresses." For now, Chiarelli is focusing on the draft. "I read about a bunch of (solid) centermen and were not in the market for any centerman," he said. Defencemen also "are becoming a major topic of conversation." He might even trade his first-round pick. "Everything is always available," Chiarelli said. ' ' '
DETROIT -- Clarke MacArthur and the Ottawa Senators snapped their three-game losing streak in an unlikely venue. MacArthur scored two goals, and the Senators outlasted Detroit in a testy third period to beat the Red Wings 4-2 on Saturday night. Ottawa won for the first time in four games, and the Senators have also taken two in a row at Joe Louis Arena for only the second time. They beat the Red Wings 6-1 in Detroit on Oct. 23. "Coming here is never easy," MacArthur said. "Youve lost three in a row and you come in here and get a win." Bobby Ryan scored the tiebreaking goal on a two-man advantage with 16:09 remaining for the Senators, and MacArthur added an insurance goal later in the third period. Chris Neil also scored for Ottawa. Pavel Datsyuk tied it at 2 early in the third -- with the Red Wings enjoying a 5-on-3 power play. But Ottawa took advantage of its own opportunity when Detroit was down two men, going back ahead on Ryans goal. Detroits Daniel Alfredsson was out of the lineup against his former team because of a groin injury. Ottawas only other back-to-back wins at Detroit were separated by nearly 18 months. The Senators beat the Red Wings 2-1 on Oct. 24, 1995, then beat them 3-2 on April 11, 1997. Darren Helm scored in the first period for the Red Wings, who have won only one of their last nine games -- although they have earned points in six thanks to a string of games that went beyond regulation. Detroit is 4-4-6 at home this season. Datsyuk tied this one just over a minute into the third period. He sent what looked like a pass across the goal mouth, but the puck caromed off the left skate of Ottawa defenceman Jared Cowen and past goalie Robin Lehner for Datsyuks 12th goal. But with Helm in the box for hooking, Detroits Kyle Quincey received a four-minute, high-sticking penalty, giving Ottawa a 5-on-3 edge for 81 seconds. The Senators needed all but 5 seconds, but Ryan finally one-timed a shot past goalie Jimmy Howard from a sharp angle to the left of the net. It was his 11th goal of the season. It wasnt long before the Red Wings were up two men again -- their third 5-on-3 of the game. This one lasted 92 seconds. Ottawa killed it, although moments after one of the penalties expired, Detroits Johan Franzen batted a rebound into the net with his left hand. The goal was immediately disallowed. "We dont want to give up three or four 5-on-3s," MacArthur said. "I dont know if their skates were sharpened but they went down really easy a couple of times." MacArthurs power-play goal with 4:02 to play made it 4-2. Lehner had 34 saves. Howard stopped 25 shots. Neil and Detroits Brendan Smith fought in the second period, and the third period was full of skirmishes and penalties. There were nine minor penalties called in the third, in addition to Quinceys double minor. Detroits Niklas Kronwall, Gustav Nyquist and Howard were all called for penalties in the final 5:51, limiting any chance of a comeback. "I didnt like the Kronwall penalty. I thought it was an awful call, but other than that, you deserve what you get," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "You cant be in the box all night. No one gets into rhythm like that." The Senators led 2-1 after the first period despite being outshot 17-7. Detroit controlled the early stages and had the games first eight shots. The Red Wings finally took the lead on a power-play goal by Helm. Ottawa answered with two goals in 2:21. MacArthur was able to lift the puck into the net after a scramble in front of Howard, and the Senators took the lead on Neils goal. "Were a desperate team right now. We need every win and to get on a roll," Lehner said. "A lot of things went right after the first 10 minutes. It was a really good game." Detroit had a two-man advantage for 1:33 in the second, but Ottawa killed it, to the delight of a group of Senators fans high above the goal Ottawa was defending. NOTES: Detroits Todd Bertuzzi missed the game with an upper-body injury. Stephen Weiss returned to the lineup for the Red Wings, coming off the injured list earlier Saturday. Weiss had been out with a groin injury. ... Cowen appeared to catch Datsyuk in the head with his left arm in the third period, but the Detroit star was able to keep playing. Iwakuma pitched seven innings of one-run ball despite some trouble with his off-speed repertoire, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 4-1 on Friday night for their fourth straight victory. Iwakuma (10-6) allowed just five hits despite struggling to throw strikes with his curveball and slider, and got a boost from Mike Zuninos three-run homer in the fifth. "I think through my experience not only here but back in Japan too, Ive been in the game a long time and I think experience has a big thing to do with todays result," Iwakuma said through an interpreter. Iwakuma became the third Seattle pitcher to reach double-digit victories this season. The right-hander said he had no feel for his off-speed pitches and his most important pitch, the splitter, was not diving as it usually does. But he still managed to strike out three without a walk. Iwakuma improved to 5-2 with a 2.04 ERA in his last eight starts. He has pitched at least seven innings in his last seven outings. "I didnt have command of each of my pitches. I was able to execute when I needed to but thats how it was," Iwakuma said. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his 32nd save in 35 opportunities as Seattle remained a half-game behind Kansas City for the second wild card in the American League. Zunino moved into a tie for the major league lead in home runs by a catcher with his 18th of the season. Zuninos opposite-field drive to right off Jose Quintana gave Seattle a 3-1 lead and came after Chicago third baseman Conor Gillaspie dropped a popup from Logan Morrison. Kendrys Morales added a sacrifice fly later in the inning. "Thats where I really want to drive the ball when Im feeling good," Zunino said. "I was able to get a good fastball on a 2-0 count and barrel it up." Dayan Viciedo continued his success against Seattle with an opposite-field homer on the first pitch he saw from Iwakuma in the fourth, but that accounted for all of Chicagos offence.dddddddddddd The White Sox have lost four straight and six of seven. "Everything were going through, its just like youre in a funk," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "If it can go wrong, its going to go wrong." Quintana (6-8) retired 12 of his first 14 batters before falling apart in the fifth when Seattle sent nine batters to the plate. Chris Denorfia walked on four pitches to start the inning, followed by Gillaspies error. Quintana fell behind Zunino and left a fastball elevated on the outer half of the plate. CANO, CAN HIT Seattles Robinson Cano extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the seventh inning, matching a season high. He also stole his ninth base, setting a new career high. Cano is hitting .412 with two homers during the hit streak. LONG BALL STREAK Viciedo has homered in three consecutive games and has connected in three of five games against Seattle this season. Its the third time in his career Viciedo has homered in three straight games. TRAINERS ROOM Chicago: Outfielder Adam Eaton lasted one batter before leaving the game. Eaton grounded out to start the game and walked slowly back to the dugout. He left with soreness in his rib cage and was replaced by Leury Garcia. Seattle: Utilityman Willie Bloomquist was lost for the season after a scope on Friday revealed that he needed microfracture surgery on his right knee. Bloomquist should be ready by spring training next season. UP NEXT Chicago: Former Seattle pitcher Hector Noesi (6-8) will throw for the second time in his career against the Mariners. Noesi was designated for assignment earlier this season by Seattle, but has latched on with the White Sox and is scheduled to make his 19th start. Seattle: Left-hander James Paxton (2-0) will make his second start after several setbacks that have limited him this season. Paxton threw 4 1-3 innings on Aug. 2 in Baltimore in his first start since April 8. Paxton first landed on the disabled list in April because of a strained lat muscle. ' ' '
BALTIMORE -- Even though the Boston Red Sox insist that theyve turned the page from last year, their first win of the season was eerily reminiscent of 2013. David Ortiz and Mike Napoli homered, John Lackey threw six sharp innings and Boston ruined the Baltimore debut of Ubaldo Jimenez with a 6-2 victory Wednesday night. Dustin Pedroia had four hits for the defending World Series champion Red Sox, now 1-1 after losing to Baltimore on opening day. "Dustin, David and Mike. Thats three of the better hitters in the league," said Boston manager John Farrell, who rode the trio to 97 wins during the 2013 regular season. Lackey (1-0) looked even sharper than he did last year, when he had a 3.52 ERA in 29 starts. In this one, the right-hander allowed two runs and three hits before handing the ball to the bullpen, which finished with three scoreless innings. "I just threw country hard balls the first few innings, then was able to mix in other pitches later on," Lackey said. "I was very pleased for the first time. It felt pretty good. Its something I can keep building on." Lackey said he made "one mistake" -- an 0-2 pitch that Nelson Cruz hit over the right field wall for his second homer in two games. But the Orioles did little else right against Lackey, who walked one and struck out six in improving to 14-5 lifetime against Baltimore. "He had command and he was throwing strikes and he was working fast," Orioles catcher Matt Wieters said. "It seemed like it was the fourth or fifth inning before we really started to see some pitches over the middle of the plate. Youve got to tip your hat to him. When he can locate like that with his kind of stuff, youre going to have success." Ortiz connected in the third inning and Napoli made it 4-2 with a two-run shot in the fifth. Both homers came off Jimenez (0-1), who signed a four-year contract with the Orioles in February after winning 13 games with Cleveland last year. "The one to David, that was a good pitch," Jimenez said. "It seems like he was looking for that pitch and he hit it good. But the one to Napoli, I would definitely like to have that back. Oh-and-2, big mistake. I was trying to go away and left it right down the middle." Jimenez allowed four runs, five hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out six in his lamentable Orioles debut. "You always want to win. But it is part of the game," he said. "Thats how it goes. I still have 30 more games to go. I have to get ready for my next one." Ortiz put the Red Sox up 2-0 in the third inning with a drive to right following a single by Pedroia. Ortiz was 0 for 7 lifetime against Jimenez before connecting. "The pitch to Ortiz wasnt a bad pitch," Wieters said. "He was probably looking for something in and he got it and he didnt miss it. Youve got to give him credit." Lackey gave up a leadoff single to Nick Markakis, then retired 11 straight before Chris Davis walked with two outs in the fourth. Cruz followed with an opposite-field drive to right on an 0-2 pitch. Signed as a free agent in February, Cruz has accounted for all of Baltimores four runs this season -- three RBIs and a run scored. In the fifth, Jimenez hit Daniel Nava with a pitch and Napoli homered on an 0-2 count. Boston pulled away in the seventh against Ryan Webb. After two singles and an intentional walk to Ortiz loaded the bases, Napoli lined a two-run single to left. Napoli had a major league-leading 31 RBIs last year with the bases loaded. And this year, nothings changed. "In that situation, youve got one out and the bases loaded, so Im just trying to hit a flyball to get the run in," Napoli said. "I just happened to get a base hit, so thats extra. Its nice to come through in those situations." Hamilton (3-7) moves into a three-way tie for first in the East with Toronto and Montreal, who both lost this weekend. And Saskatchewan, missing injured quarterback Darian Durant, saw its league-best winning streak end at seven games. With a record of 8-3, the Riders fall into a share of second spot with Edmonton in the mighty CFL West Division. Collaros threw touchdown passes to Luke Tasker and Terrell Sinkfield scored on a 58-yard punt return for the victory in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,135 fans at Tim Hortons Field. "It feels good to win," said Collaros, who completed 29 of 36 pass attempts for 287 yards, two TDs and one interception. "I thought the offensive line did a great job all day. Thats a heckuva D-line over there." Ticat kicker Justin Medlock hit field goals from 50 and 51 yards and added a 57-yard punt single, but hit the left upright in the third quarter from 43 yards out. Saskatchewan kicker Chris Milo hit a 10-yarder on his lone attempt. Hamilton receiver Andy Fantuz made 11 catches for 108 yards. The Ticats won the battle for time of possession, controlling the ball for 32:13 to Saskatchewans 27:47. They had seen that as a key battle in keeping their own defence rested. And that seemed to pay off. The Ticat defence held the Saskatchewan rushing attack to 105 yards -- an attack that averaged 150.7 yards per game coming in. Meanwhile, the Roughrider defensive line, that had sacked Collaros 10 times in their first meeting to start the season (a Saskatchewan 31-10 win), only got to him three times. Hamiltons defence sacked Tino Sunseri five times. Ticats defensive co-ordinator Orlondo Steinauer said you can plan a defensive strategy, but its up to the players to execute it. "What I saw (today) were guys that didnt want to lose," he said. "To be honest with you, (I saw) a different level of intensity in their preparation starting early in the week and it just followed all the way through four quarters today." Sunseri, starting in place of Durant, who is expected to be out for the season afterr tearing a tendon in his right elbow, completed nine of 21 pass attempts for 88 yards, one interception and no touchdowns.dddddddddddd Saskatchewan coach Corey Chamblin said the game was a challenge. With the best running game in the league right now and a back-up quarterback running the offence, everybody expected his team to run the ball. The Riders rush about 47 per cent of the time -- more than any other team in the league. Heading into the game, they led the league with 1,507 net yards on the ground. But when youre riding a seven-game win streak, you know it has to eventually end. "When youve been winning so long, eventually you have to come down," Chamblin said. "Its part of football. There have been lots of games we won but we could have lost. This one, there was a chance when we were down by just 10 points (at the end of the half), but we lost. Its not stunning. Its a part of football." Hamilton mismanaged the clock at the end of the first half, squandering a scoring opportunity while in Saskatchewan territory, and took a 13-3 lead into halftime. Medlock couldnt add to the lead early in the third when his 43-yard field-goal attempt hit the left upright. But Sinkfield made it 20-3 for the Ticats soon after when he returned a 38-yard punt by Milo 58 yards for the touchdown. Roughrider defensive lineman Derek Walker shut down another promising Hamilton drive late in the third with an interception at the Saskatchewan 12, grabbing a deflected pass from Collaros. But with less than four minutes left to play, Hamilton finished an 85-yard drive with a 14-yard TD pass from Collaros to Tasker. Medlocks 57-yard punt single made it 28-3. Hamilton was up 6-0 at the end of the first quarter on two Medlock field goals, from 50 and 51 yards with the wind. The Ticats followed the game plan controlling the ball for most of the quarter, keeping it away from the Roughriders powerful running backs. A short 20-yard punt by Milo near the end of the quarter gave the Ticats the ball at the Saskatchewan 44. Four plays later, Collaros hit Tasker for a 14-yard catch-and-run TD to open second-quarter scoring and take a 13-0 lead. Saskatchewan finally got on the board when Milo hit a 10-yard field goal with three minutes left in the half. The Roughriders took 11 plays and 4:54 to move 55 yards, aided by three Hamilton penalties, but the Ticat defence came up big with first-and-goal at the three-yard-line, stuffing Jerome Messam at the line of scrimmage and then forcing an incomplete throw in the end zone. The half ended 13-3 as Hamilton missed an opportunity to get at least a field goal. After driving 62 yards to the Saskatchewan 21, the Ticats ran a play from scrimmage with about seven seconds remaining but couldnt get the ball out of bounds fast enough and time expired before any attempt at a scoring play. TORONTO - Toronto Raptors centre Jonas Valanciunas was arrested for impaired driving in Wasaga Beach, roughly two hours north of Toronto, early Monday morning. According to an Ontario Provincial Police release, Valanciunas was charged with "Exceed 80" after an investigation revealed he had been in control of his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. OPP officers were responding to a report that open beer bottles had been spotted in a silver vehicle going through a drive-thru at approximately 2:30 a.m. Police traced the alleged vehicle to a residence nearby and Valanciunas, the driver, was placed under arrest. Its unclear whether he was alone at the time. "I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously," said the 21-year-old in a statement released by the team Monday evening. "I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them." The Raptors were in between a pair of days off at the time of the incident. "We were made aware this morning of the incident involving Jonas Valanciunas and are disappointed he has put himself in this situation," the Raptors added in a release. "We take this matter very seriously as we have high expectations for all members of this organization." Valanciunas is scheduled to appear in court in Collingwood on April 22, in the midst of Torontos first-round playoff series. If the Raptors second-year centre is convicted of the charge he will likely face supplementary discipline from the NBA. League precedent suggests he could face a one or two-game suspension, issued following a conviction. Aaron Barrett Jersey . LOUIS -- David Ross never expected to be on a World Series podium. And Anthony Calvillo is no exception. He came to the CFL in the most unusual of circumstances, the 21-year-old quarterback of a CFL expansion team in Las Vegas that spent its one and only season playing before crowds that resembled friends and family. That first season, he completed 44 per cent of his passes and threw more interceptions than touchdowns while the team stumbled to a 5-13 record and then folded. Had Calvillo hung up his cleats right then and there, no one would have blamed him. And no one would have remembered him, either. At that time, he was about as anonymous as a CFL player could be. All of which makes more remarkable the journey hes taken over the past 20 years, retiring as the all-time leading passer in pro football history, three Grey Cup rings and a legacy in Canadian football that is virtually unmatched. The lesson of Anthony Calvillos career is that those who become stars in the Canadian game are rarely those who possess eye-popping physical attributes, or who arrive with bona fide star power. They are, instead, usually players whose full skill sets arent obvious right away, requiring a combination of humility, determination, patience and smarts to reach their potential. And in Calvillos case, he needed every one of those qualities to get him to the top. Calvillos time in Las Vegas was followed by a move to Hamilton for three seasons where he served primarily as backup quarterback for the Tiger-Cats, followed by two more with Montreal where he once again played the understudy, this time under CFL great, Tracy Ham. If there was greatness ahead of him at that time, only Calvillo would have known it. Yet six years into his professional career, following Hams retirement after the 1999 season, Calvillo took the reins in Montreal looking like someone whod been succeeding at the Canadian game all his life. It turns out Calvillo had made good use of those first hallf-dozen years in the league, refining his craft, learning from his own mistakes and those of others, quietly turning himself into someone who was ready and able to engineer a CFL offence.dddddddddddd When his time came to become a starter with Montreal, he was meticulous and calm, the consummate professional who could command respect from those around him with his approach to the game and unmatched level of preparedness. Had his success come earlier in his career, Calvillo might not have lasted as long as he did in the CFL. But when the National Football League comes looking for players in Canada, it tends to value youth and overhwelming physical skills. To appreciate Anthony Calvillo, you couldnt just look at tape or watch him at a workout. You had to see him game-in and game-out to understand the consistency, how rarely his instincts betrayed him and what a winner he was. That recogntion didnt come quickly in Canada either, however. Consider that when TSN did its Top 50 all-time players list in 2006, a survey of football media from across the country, Calvillos name wasnt on it. It wasnt truly until the final half-dozen years of his career that Calvillo began to receive his due as one of the leagues all-time greats, as the success he accumulated year after year became impossible to ignore. Calvillo is the last player to have played for a U.S. expansion team to retire, closing the book on that desperate chapter of CFL history but at the same time reminding us it wasnt all bad. If it werent for the Las Vegas Posse, would Calvillo have ever played in the CFL? And even if he had surfaced elsewhere in the league, would his journey somehow have turned out differently? Its been a great ride for Anthony Calvillo, the rare CFL player who retires as a nationally recognized name in Canada. From the unlikeliest of beginnings to the highest of accolades, he earned everything he got along the way. DENVER -- Dishing the ball to the open man in the first half opened the door to Randy Foyes offensive surge in the second half. Foye scored 24 of his 30 points in the last 24 minutes, going 7 for 7 from the field in the third quarter, and the Denver Nuggets hung on to beat the Houston Rockets 123-116 on Wednesday night. Kenneth Faried had 23 points and Timofey Mozgov added 22 for the Nuggets, who beat the Rockets for the first time in three tries this season. Foye also had 15 assists, 11 of them coming in the first half. "I just think it was a Karma thing, where in the beginning, I had some shots where I could have come off (pick-and-rolls) and pulled up, but I passed it to Kenneth, passed it to Timo, got those guys going," Foye said. "That kind of opened everything up. When I was coming off pick-and-rolls later, they were so concerned with our bigs that I was coming off and knocking them down." Houston coach Kevin McHale said the Rockets have to play stronger defensively. "Our defence is bad," he said. "Faried and Mozgov were just running down the floor, posting us up and throwing us out of the way. We had no answers for them. In the third quarter, we got them somewhat under control and then Foye went crazy." Jeremy Lin led eight Houston players in double figures with 18 points. Both teams were missing key players heading into the game and the Rockets got a scare when James Harden, leading a fast break, banged his left shin in a collision with Aaron Brooks midway through the third quarter. Fouled on the play, Harden made both free throws and left the game briefly to have the leg tended to before returning to action, though he only played sparingly after the injury. "I guess I got kneed in the shin but it was pretty painful. For a couple of seconds, my leg was numb," Harden said. In the post-season, Harden said he would have finished the game. "But today was kind of pointless. Four more games left and were trying to stay (in the No. 4 playoff seed)," Harden said. Houstons Dwight Howard, bothered by a left ankle sprain, did not play for the 10th time in the last 12 games. Denver was without Wilson Chandler (left groin strain) and Ty Lawson (left ankle sprain). Trailing by 10 at the half, Houston pulled to 94-86 on a jumper by Chandler Parsons late in the third quarter. Foye, though, hit a long jumper, starting an 11-2 run over a 2 1/2-minute stretch that put Denver in front 105-88 heading into the fourth quarter. Houston made a late push, getting within 118-114 on a 3-pointer by Troy Daniels and a tip-in by Isaiah Canaan with 2:24 left to play. But Foye banked in a jumper and Evan Fournier connected on a 3-pointer in successive Denver possessions to fend off the Rockets rally. The Rockets, trailing by as many as 19 points earlier in the game, put together an 8-0 burst to cut the deficit to 58-53 with 1:44 left in the second quarter. Lin and Parsons each had 3-pointers in the stretch. Faried responded by converting a three-point play, helping Denver rebuild its lead to 68-58 at halftime. Possibly in the pregame layup line. But shoot this way in the NBA Finals, against the two-time defending champions? "Its not something you can plan for," San Antonio reserve Manu Ginobili said. "There was no magic plays. We just moved the ball and every shot went in." Not quite every shot. But just about. Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high 29 points, and the Spurs made a finals-record 75.8 per cent of their shots in the first half in a 111-92 victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday night that gave them a 2-1 lead. The Spurs made 19 of their first 21 shots and finished 25 of 33 in the first half, bettering the 75 per cent shooting by Orlando against the Lakers in the 2009 finals. "Its a hit-or-miss league," Miamis Dwyane Wade said. The Spurs didnt do much missing. "I dont think well ever shoot 76 per cent in a half ever again," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. The Spurs led by as much as 25 and were only briefly challenged in their second lopsided victory in the series. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade had 22 points for the Heat, who host Game 4 on Thursday. Returning to the arena where they were oh-so-close to winning a fifth championship last year, the Spurs came out playing like they were trying to build a lead that was impossible to blow. They shot 13 of 15 and led 41-25 lead after the first quarter, then hit their first six shots of the second in front of a stunned crowd in Miami to go ahead 55-30. Leonard scored only 18 points in the first two games, looking frustrated while getting into foul trouble trying to defend James in Game 2. But he had his outside shot working early, making his first six shots and finishing 10 of 13 from the field. "I just found a rhythm and my teammates found me the ball. I made shots," Leonard said. The last three NBA seasons ended in this building, the last two followed by Heat championship parades. The Spurs nearly cancelled the last one, building a five-point lead in the final half-minute of regulation of Game 6, a title seeming so certain that workers were already making preparations around the court. But the Heat rallied to win in overtime and took Game 7, leaving the Spurs with a summmer to think about the one that got away.dddddddddddd Theyre in good shape to get another chance. With the league scrapping the 2-3-2 format for the NBA Finals --in which the lower seed played three consecutive home games -- the Spurs would have a chance to wrap it up in San Antonio on Sunday in Game 5 if they can win Thursday. Chris Bosh took only four shots and scored nine points for the Heat, who for the second straight year will have to overcome a 2-1 finals deficit after being blown out in Game 3. This rout came on their home floor, where they had been 8-0 this post-season and had won a franchise-record 11 in a row since the Spurs beat them in Game 1 last year. San Antonio inserted Boris Diaw into the lineup, countering Miamis small lineup and creating more ball movement that clearly helped Leonard. The game got off to a crisp start, with the Spurs making their first five shots and Miami opening 4 for 4. Turned out the Spurs were just getting started. Coach Erik Spoelstra planned to communicate with James to make sure there were no lingering problems from the cramps that forced him to miss the final minutes of the opener. But there was no way he could rest James early, since he was the only one keeping the Heat in the game. He had 14 of their first 20 points, but even James couldnt keep up with the Spurs pace. The Spurs "came out at a different gear than what we were playing at, and it just seemed we were on our heels the most part of the first half," Spoelstra said. San Antonio led 71-50 at halftime. It was the first 70-point first half in the finals since the Lakers scored 75 against Boston in Game 2 in 1987. The Heat finally got into it in the third, running off 10 straight points to cut a 17-point deficit to 81-74 on a drive by Norris Cole, who had replaced an ineffective Mario Chalmers. That was as close as Miami would get, as the Spurs pulled away in the fourth. Notes: Wade appeared in his 150th post-season game and passed Dirk Nowitzki (3,455 points) for 17th on the post-season scoring list. ... The Heat fell to 68-20 in the post-season at American Airlines Arena. Their .782 winning percentage entering the game trailed only the Lakers .792 mark at Staples Center. ' ' '
Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, Heres an interesting one. I know its common knowledge that all players are responsible for their sticks. We witnessed that when Zack Kassian hit Edmontons Sam Gagner in the face after a missed check. He received a five-game suspension plus the remainder of the pre-season. On Wednesday, Henrik Zetterberg fell down and came over the top with his stick. The lumber struck Dan Hamhuis of Vancouver in the mouth cutting him profusely. Both incidences were very similar, no? A player out of control and swinging his stick recklessly. But why was Zetterbergs forgiven if he should have been accountable for his stick as well? Thanks for any clarification. Art We Art: Thank you for your question. The most obvious similarity on the two plays you reference is that injury resulted to both Sam Gagner and Dan Hamhuis; albeit in varying degrees of severity (broken jaw vs. substantial cut to lip). Beyond that I see considerable differences that exist when considering the potential for player suspension. I would argue that Zack Kassian was in control of his stick when he swung it with purpose in an attempt to make some form of contact with Sam Gagner once the Oiler forward stopped hard to avoid the body check that Kassian was in the process of delivering. I dont believe for a second that Zack Kassian intended for the swing to catch Gagner in the face and break his jaw. None the less, that was the unfortunate result of the wild stick swing used as part of an intended, but missed body check. Kassian received the appropriate double minor penalty on the ice at the time of the incident. The careless manner (video link) with which Henrik Zetterberg brought his stick down hard as he was rolling over to regain his feet following an awkward tumble falls within the spirit and intent of the high-sticking rule. Rule references: 60.1 (Players must be in control and responsible for his stick) and 60.3 (When a player carries or holds any part of his stick above the shoulders of the opponent so that injury results, the Referee shall assess a double-minor penalty for all contact that causes an injury, whether accidental or careless, in the opinion of the Referee.) Henrik Zetterberg should have been assessed a double minor on the play but no call resulted from the high-sticking infraction. Any of the four Officials could have made this call as a result of the injury to Dan Hamhuis. While the call on the ice should have been the same in both cases there are distinct differences between these two plays when supplemental discipline is being considered. Henrik Zetterberg was in a prone position on the ice and the momentum of rolling onto to his knees included his stick travelling over the top accidentally striking Dan Hamhuis. This lack of responsibility and control by Zetterberg was careless for sure but not worthy of a suspension. Zack Kassian on the other hand had his skates under him and I submit swung his stick intending to make contact with his opponent in some manner. The deliberation of this act and the severity of the injury that resulted are worthy of a suspension. Wishing everyone a very safe and blessed All Saints and All Souls weekend. Adidas NMD R1 España . PRETORIA, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius will undergo psychiatric evaluation after the judge ruled at his murder trial Wednesday that his state of mind when he killed his girlfriend should be assessed by experts, possibly delaying court proceedings for two months. The ruling was prompted by testimony by a psychiatrist on behalf of the defence that the double-amputee Olympic athlete has generalized anxiety disorder and that this may have influenced his judgment when he fatally shot Reeva Steenkamp through a toilet door in his home on Feb. 14, 2013. The chief prosecutor, Gerrie Nel, then requested psychiatric testing -- a move opposed by Pistorius chief lawyer. Judge Thokozile Masipa agreed with the prosecutor, saying it was important to independently assess Pistorius state of mind because the defence might now argue that he was not criminally responsible for the shooting because of his anxiety disorder. "The accused may not have raised the issue that he was not criminally responsible at the time of the incident in so many words, but evidence led on his behalf clearly raised the issue and cannot be ignored," the judge said. Pistorius will likely be evaluated by a panel of psychiatrists at a government facility. Pistorius says he shot Steenkamp by mistake in the pre-dawn hours, thinking there was an intruder in his home. His lawyers have regularly pointed to his fear of violent crime and vulnerability as an amputee as central to his account of a mistaken killing. After meeting with Pistorius on two occasions at the beginning of this month, Dr. Merryll Vorster testified this week that he was "hyper-vigilant" and constantly feared being attacked. But legal analysts said the defence teams decision to introduce Vorsters testimony may have backfired. John Welch, former deputy director of South Africas public prosecuting authority, said Pistorius lawyers may have called the psychiatrist to the stand at such a late stage in the trial to "remedy" the athletes own testimony, which has been viewed as unconvincing. But in testifying that Pistorius was anxious, felt vulnerable to crime and may not have intended to kill Steenkamp, Vorster possibly "went too far" in her description of the psychiatric disorder, according to Welch. Pistorius, 27, stood with his hands clasped in front of him in the courtroom as the judge explained her decision. He could be acquitted if the judge rules he was not criminally responsible for Steenkamps shooting because of a mental illness. A mental disorder could also be used by his defence for a lighter sentence in the event of a conviction. The prosecution says Pistorius killed Steenkamp intentionally after an argument. In asking for the psychiatric evaluation, Nel may be trying to remove grounds for appeal by the defence -- on the basis of a psychiatric disorder -- should he be convicted. Judge Masipa said the court would reconvene on Tuesday to decide on details regarding Pistorius period of observation. In South Africa, it is normally for 30 days. Masipa said it would be preferable that Pistorius be evaluated as an outpatient and return home each day after tests. He is free on bail after being charged with premeditated murder. After his tests, the experts who assess Pistorius would take additional time to compile a report and submit it to the court. That could take another month, raising the possibility of a two-month delay in the trial, which started March 3 and is in its eighth week of proceedings. The judge acknowledged that there would be a significant delay, but said it was necessary. "This is not about anyones convenience, but rather about whether justice has been served," Masipa said. Marius du Toit, a defence lawyer not involved in the case but following it closely, said a panel of three psychiatrists would provide the court with a report on Pistorius, and it may also deal with the issue of his fitness to stand trial at all. Despite the defence teams opposition to the psychiatric evaluation, Pistorius uncle, Arnold Pistorius, said outside the courthouse that the ruling reaffirmed the familys confidence in the justice system. "As a family, we are comforted by the thoroughness and detail of this judgment and Judge Masipas commitment, using every avenue, to ensure a fair trial," Arnold Pistorius said in his prepared statement. ------ Imray reported from Stellenbosch, South Africa. Anthony, who entered the game just three points shy of the 20,000-point plateau, finished with 28 and hit the eventual game-winner for New York, which has won two straight since a 24-point loss to Chicago in its season opener. Amare Stoudemire contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench and Iman Shumpert added 15 points in the win. Al Jefferson paced the Hornets with 21 points, while Kemba Walker tallied 16 points and Lance Stephenson nearly deposited a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Gary Neal and Walker scored on back-to-back possessions late in the fourth to give the Hornets a 93-90 lead. Pablo Prigioni then drove the lane on the Knicks ensuing touch and kicked it over to Shumpert, who nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game. Following a miss from Walker at the other end, Anthony drilled a contested jumper from the elbow to give New York the lead for good with 1:24 remaining. Neither team came up with points on their respective possessions with under a minute to go. Charlotte then turned the ball over on a pivotal five-second violation inbounding at half court. Shumpert missed a deep jumper following a timeout and Charlotte had a chance to tie with 16.6 seconds left. Walker drove the lane, pumped to get Prigioni in the air, but his jumper was long. Anthony corralled the miss and split a pair of free throws and Charlotte didnt get a shot offf before the buzzer.dddddddddddd Its a work in progress defensively, Knicks coach Derek Fisher said. Theyre effort in just trying to do what were asking them defensively is really high. Were still making it hard for teams to score in a lot of situations and its good to see. Anthony opened the game with a jumper, then made history as the sixth-youngest player to reach 20,000 points with a 3-pointer minutes later. The trey from Anthony was a part of a 15-5 run to open the game, and the Knicks lead was as high as 12 in the quarter before Charlotte trimmed the deficit to 29-21 heading into the second. New York slowly built its lead to a game-high 15 in the second, but the Hornets used a 20-7 run over the final 4:23 to trail 52-50 at the break. As the shot clock was set to expire late in the third, Anthony rose up and canned a deep 3-pointer just inside the Knicks logo at center court to tie the game at 69-69. The game went back and forth over the final minutes of the quarter, with Charlotte taking an 80-79 lead into the fourth. Game Notes Charlotte is 6-22 at Madison Square Garden since 1997-98 ... Hornets forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist went up for a defensive rebound early in the first, collided with Shane Larkin and slammed to the floor, grasping at his right shoulder as Charlottes medical team ran onto the court. ALLEN PARK, Mich. - Calvin Johnson is expected to return this week as the Detroit Lions enter a critical stretch of the season.Johnson said Wednesday he is back to his normal practice routine and will play Sunday when Detroit (6-2) hosts the Miami Dolphins (5-3) at Ford Field.Feeling good, Johnson said. Extremely motivated, especially with where we are as a team right now. Weve got Miami coming to our house so (lets) go ahead and get off to a good start in the third quarter of the season.Johnson sat out three games with an ankle injury while Detroit carried on and went 3-0 in his absence, albeit with less-than impressive offensive numbers. The Lions have not gained more than 400 yards since getting 417 in a Week 1 win over the New York Giants. But Johnsons return brings renewed hope with Detroit holding a one-game lead over Green Bay (5-3) in the NFC North. It changes (our offence), obviously, quarterback Matthew Stafford said. Maybe not so much in the plays we run but in how defences treat us. ... Were dangerous in the pass game when hes out there, so teams are probably worried about defending him scoring an 80-yard touchdown first.Golden Tate emerged as a reliable No. 1 target with Johnson sidelined, grabbing at least seven receptions in each of the past four games. Extra reps for he and rookie wideout Corey Fuller over the past month could pay dividends during the second half of the season.Golden had a big opportunity this year with Calvin and a bunch of other guys going down to step up, Stafford said. He grabbed that role and played extremely well for us. ... With the addition of him and hopefully getting Calvin back and some of the other guys at some point, (the offence) could be dangerous.Detroit has also been without tight ends Joseph Fauria, Brandon Pettigrew and rookie Eric Ebron, all three of whom did not play against Atlanta. Running back Reggie Bush was also unavailable against the Falcons, but said Wednesday he will be back for the Miami game.Detroits rushing offence is second-worst in the NFL and in need of a spark entering a key three-game stretch against Miami, at Arizona (7-1) and at New England (7-2). Bush said everyone must do a better job in the backfield, but a healthy Calvin Johnson should help too.Hes a running backs best friend, Bush said. Having him out there, even if hes just a decoy its great for the run game. I think thats going to have an (impact).Miami is one of the hottest teams in the NFL having won four of its past five games, including a 37-0 home win against San Diego last week.Weve got a lot of work cut out for us because were playing a team thats playing extremely well on both sides of the ball, coach Jim Caldwell said. This one presents every challenge that we could possibly think of.The Lions started 6-3 last year, but dropped six of their last seven games to miss the playoffs. Bush said its important to keep that in mind as the Lions prepare for three straight games against teams with a winning record. They dont give out any awards after the first half of the season, Bush said. If anybody should learn from last year its us. We shouldnt be looking ahead, we shouldnt be talking about the playoffs. We should be looking at this game and thats it.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLFake Nike Air Vapormax . -- Atlanta Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson is being checked for a possible concussion after blowing a tire on his way to the first workout of spring training. The closer wasnt available. The road trip, a disaster to that point. In the end, it didnt matter that Team Canada could only muster up a half point. What really mattered was that this event came off, that world-class golf came to Halifax and it was embraced by the fans. Mondays RBC Canada Cup was a success in every measurement except perhaps the scoreboard. Under sunny skies and with steamy temperatures, Mike Weir, Graham DeLaet, David Hearn and Adam Hadwin took on Matt Kuchar, Gary Woodland, Trevor Immelman and Manny Villegas at the Ashburn Golf Club. After four nine-hole, singles matches and two alternate-shot matches of the same length, Team World locked up a 5½ to a ½ victory. But never mind that, this wasnt about the score. This was about a fun outing in a part of Canada that doesnt see this kind of golf as often as does say Toronto or Montreal. Its also one of the few times that Canadas best got to team up. Weir, Hearn and DeLaet will see each other out on the PGA Tour but the chance to play together as a team was big for all three. Its the first time in your humble scribes memory that the top Canadian players teamed up on Canadian soil. And while this was an exhibition – DeLaet and Kuchar hit mulligans off the first tee in their singles match – there was still some pride on thee line.dddddddddddd "I still really want to win this," said Weir, with a big smile before teeing off. If nothing else, these guys are competitive to the end. So this was more than a skins game but less than a tournament. It was competitive but friendly, as it should be. And for sponsor RBC, it was a hit. The players teed off in a morning nine-hole pro-am which one bank official called "about the best thing weve done in a long time." The event is part of a week-long celebration of Canadian golf called GOLFest Nova Scotia and includes a Web.com Tour event where Villegas and Hadwin, along with a gaggle of talented Canadians will get down to more serious business. Kuchar took the celebration to heart, taking his family on a Nova Scotia vacation prior to the RBC Canada Cup shootout. He went to Cape Breton and played Cabot Links and visited Fox Harbr for another round. He got a good chuckle from guests at an evening dinner when he announced that his next stop was going to be P.E.I. Kuchar also delighted the crowds at the closing ceremonies when he praised the golf course and the fans, calling it a great, fun exhibition. And thats pretty much what it was – a great, fun exhibition with some marvelous golf. Just about perfect for Canada Day. ' ' '
Burnley defender Michael Keane deserves his first England call-up and will only develop further within an international setting, according to former Three Lions captain Terry Butcher. The 23-year-old was drafted into Gareth Southgates 23-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia after Stoke defender Glen Johnson was forced to withdraw because of injury. Keane, who made 16 appearances under Southgate for England U21s, has been a standout performer for newly promoted Burnley this season and Butcher is convinced the former Manchester United academy graduate will only grow into a better player from the experience. Its good and he deserves it, Butcher told Sky Sports Now. Its interesting because if you look at the stats, he has only made five tackles this season and he has won all of them. But it does show you the state of the game, its more balletic, playing balls in front of you and not necessarily going to ground.Hes done very well, hes a big boy, a handful and coming into the England squad will only help him as its another step up. Theres great company, great coaching and great media spotlight, its what you want. Keane has been an ever-present for Burnley so far this season, scoring in the 2-0 win over Watford Theres some experienced England players ahead of him in that squad, theres no doubt about that. When I came into the squad, you look around and think I am just happy to be here. I am sure hell just be glad to get on the training field and get around the players in the hotel. It will add to his experience and then it makes you more determined to get into the starting XI when it comes around. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. England then face Slovenia on Tuesday in Ljubljana, with Southgate also taking charge of the World Cup qualifier against Scotland on November 11 and the friendly with Spain on November 15. Keane replaces Stoke defender Glen Johnson in Englands 23-man squad With a busy schedule ahead for England, Butcher believes Southgate is facing a tough task, citing the players attitude and the Wayne Rooney conundrum as possible issues for him. Well, hes got four games, which is good and they are qualifiers where he has to get points and win matches, Butcher added. I was confident a few months ago that England would get points from these matches, but I am not so sure now, it really depends on the attitude of the players. Gareth Southgate will take charge of England for the next four matches, starting against Malta on Saturday I saw England play in Slovakia and theyve got the Wayne Rooney conundrum. I am sure Gareth would like to come in to a more settled situation, but as a caretaker manager its never a settled situation as something has normally happened, which it has. Hes got good experience behind him and hell know what to do. Its all down to how the players will react. Paul, just two days after suffering a left foot sprain, logged 13 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for a Clippers squad looking to rebound from Sundays home loss to the Kings. Los Angeles struggled down the stretch against Sacramento but got some much- needed production from Jamal Crawford to finish off the Jazz. Crawford played through a rib injury and scored nine of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. Gordon Hayward paced the Jazz with 27 points, but they fell to 1-3 on the young season and dropped their 10th straight game against the Clippers. Enes Kanter donated 17 points and nine boards in a losing cause. Lob City was in full effect late in the second quarter, as DeAndre Jordan threw down a pair of alley-oops, including one on a halfcourt lob from Paul, while Griffin tipped in a Crawford miss and added a dunk. Those string of buckets stretched Los Angeles lead to 48-39, and Pauls 3- pointer in the final minute of tthe half gave the Clippers a 56-43 cushion at the break.dddddddddddd. The highlight reel dunks were tough to come by in the third quarter, however, and Utah pulled even at 62-62 after Hayward sparked a 13-0 run with a pair of 3-pointers. Rudy Gobert, who was on the business end of one of Jordans dunks in the first half, threw down his own alley-oop slam early in the fourth to give the Jazz their first lead, 77-75, since the opening minutes, but the hosts took over from there. Reggie Bullock countered with a 3-pointer and Crawford converted a three-point play the next time down to give the Clippers control. Griffin scored while being fouled with 2:52 remaining. The free throw yielded a 100-91 advantage, and the Clippers held on the rest of the way. Game Notes Paul has 12 career triple-doubles ... Crawford eclipsed 15,000 points for his career ... ST. LOUIS -- Travis Wood made a beeline for fellow pitcher Jeff Samardzijas locker. He wanted to apologize for all of that run support. "I instantly came in here and gave him a hug and said sorry," the lefty said after the Chicago Cubs got six RBIs from Junior Lake in a 17-5 rout over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. "The offence played great, they brought their A game." Samardzija has a 1.45 ERA, but is 0-3. The Cubs have totalled 15 runs in his eight starts. Lake homered and doubled twice for Chicago, which had lost seven of eight overall. The Cubs totalled just four runs while getting swept in a three-game series at Atlanta over the weekend -- Emilio Bonifacio scored five times himself in this romp. "Thats what we needed," Lake said. "Just play hard and something happened good." Chicago has the worst record in the league at 13-24, but is 4-3 against the defending NL champions. The Cardinals were forced to finish with infielder Daniel Descalso as a relief pitcher getting the final out in the ninth. Its the first time St. Louis used a position player to pitch since Rob Johnson against the Dodgers in a 13-4 loss at home Aug. 7. "Its embarrassing to have to put him into that spot," manager Mike Matheny said. "Hes a team guy and understands, but should have never been in that spot to begin with." "Its tough for all of us to watch." The Cubs hit for the cycle in the first five batters -- Bonifacio doubled, Anthony Rizzo singled, Starlin Castro tripled and Mike Olts two-run homer capped a four-run first inning. Bonifacio had four of Chicagos 20 hits and scored a career-best five times -- the most in the majors this season -- once on a play overturned by video review. Rizzo and Castro each drove in three as the Cubs set season highs for runs and hits. Cardinals reliever Randy Choate gave up a career-worst six runs in the ninth and left with two outs. Descalso made his first pro pitching appearance and retired the only batter he faced, getting Olt on a fly ball. "I just went out there and did what they asked me to do," Descalso said. "I really dont want to talk about this." Wood (3-4) beat St. Louis for the second time in three starts despite giving up five runs in six innings. He hit two batters in the fifth and both scored. Tyler Lyons (0-3) surrendered nine runs in four innings in his fourth start in place of injured Joe Kelly. "I felt a lot better the first two innings than I did in the third and fourth," Lyons said. "Its just one of those things. Sometimes you just get hit, I guess." Allen Craig drove in two runs for the Cardinals. Yadier Molina had two hits, an RBI and a steal when he caught Wood napping in the fifth and took third without a throw. Lake hit a three-run homer in the second for a 7-0 lead. He had an RBI double in the fourth and a two-run double in the ninth. Lake began the game with eight RBIs in 92 at-bats this season. Three of his four homers have come against the Cardinals. "Hes electric, for sure," Wood said. "When hes on, hes on. Hes got tremendous pop and nice to see it come out." Olt leads NL with eight homers, including four in the last six games, all on the road. In the fourth, Bonifacio was called out at the plate when he tried to score on Rizzos grounder to short with the infield in. The Cubs challenged the call, and the ruled was reversed. England were restricted to just 142-7 by Afghanistan at the World Twenty20 to leave their tournament hopes hanging in the balance. England were in serious trouble on 85-7 - and in danger of a major embarrassment against the tournament minnows - but late hitting from Moeen Ali (41no) and David Willey (20no) gave them a total to defend.Englands bowlers now need to bail the batsmen out or Eoin Morgans men will almost certainly be out of the tournament. Brasilia, Brazil - Brazil will still be trying to make sense of its semifinal implosion on Saturday when the team faces the Netherlands in the third-place match at the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia. Listen to all the action live on TSN 1050, TSN 690, TSN 1200, and TEAM 1410 beginning at 4pm et/1pm pt. The hosts were embarrassed by Germany, 7-1, in Tuesdays semifinal as the Germans scored five times in the span of 18 minutes in the first half on their way to the dominant win. Brazils players and coaches were sort of at a loss to explain the destruction after the match, but head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is hopeful his men can still end the World Cup on a winning note. "I know my career will be marked by this defeat, but we have an obligation to move on and think about the next goal, which in this case is the match for third place on Saturday in Brasilia," Scolari said. "I know its a much smaller dream than we all wanted, but we have to honor the shirt of the national team." In addition to Neymar missing the Germany match because of injury, Brazil was also without captain Thiago Silva through suspension and his absence in the middle of the Selecaos defense was very evident. Brazil was booed off the field at halftime of the semifinal with the team trailing 5-0, but Silva is hopeful that the fans can help to lift the players for one last match at this tournament. "This is a bad time so we need strength from our fans," said Silva, who will be eligible to return to the lineup for Saturdays fixture. "I guarantee that we will play this Saturdays game like it was the final." The Netherlands came extremely close to returning to the World Cup final as the Dutch lost on penalty kicks to Argentina following a 0-0 match through 120 minutes. After reaching the final in 2010 and losing in extra time to Spain, it will certainly be tough for Louis van Gaals team to lift themselves for Saturdays contest. The Oranje saw Argentina score on each of its four penalty kick attempts, while Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder both saw their shots saved by Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero. "It does hurt [to lose this way], especially if you are one of the players to miss," Sneijder said of the shootout. "I think there was only one team that wanted penalties and that was them [Argentina]. And yes, they won, so well done to them. Its all about taking responsibility in those situations, and sometimes [in shootouts] things can go wrong. But of course I am sad." Sneijder scored a crucial equalizer in the 88th minute against Mexico in the round of 16 to help the Dutch advance, while his side was on the opposite side of a shootout against Costa Rica in the quarterfinals. The Netherlands has yet to win a World Cup despite playing in the finals three times, while the Dutch have now lost twice in the semifinals as well. For now the Dutch will once again have to settle for the role of bridesmaid, and while both teams would like to go out with a win, Saturdays match doesnt figure to offer much solace for either side. Zimmermann became the National Leagues first 16-game winner, pitching seven solid innings to lead the Washington Nationals past the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 Wednesday night.SAN FRANCISCO - Mere minutes into the game, you could sense that Tuesday night would be a memorable one for the Raptors. It had been nearly a decade since the franchise had tasted victory in the Bay Area, as Toronto seemed poised to shock the hosting Golden State Warriors and the rest of the NBA, who began to take notice of what was transpiring in Oakland. "The @Raptors lead the @Warriors by 27 early in the 3rdQ in Golden State #NotATypo," tweeted the leagues official account. If you tuned in at that point, an impartial viewer expecting to see something remarkable, you were not disappointed. This Raptors team was on the verge of an improbable and much-needed win, instead an epic collapse secured its place in franchise history. It turned out to be a night they wont soon forget. "Weve just got to get a win," Rudy Gay said after the Raptors suffered the largest collapse in their 19-year existence, falling 112-103 to the Warriors. "However, whenever, we just need a win. It should have been tonight. Now we have to go out and find another one." "We made it tough on ourselves tonight. We just need a win, man." Like watching in slow motion, it seemed inevitable once the Warriors began to make their run late in the third. It started with consecutive turnovers (one by Gay the second by Terrence Ross) and turned into a series of open looks for the dynamic, sharpshooting backcourt duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Fortunately for the Raptors, who took an 18-point lead into the fourth, the Warriors guards missed two of three wide-open threes to end the frame. At that point Curry and Thompson were 3-of-12 from long distance and the Raptors had been closing out on most, if not all of their attempts. With 14 minutes remaining the visiting Raptors started to play with fire and against this team, in that arena, it wasnt a huge surprise when they got burned. "They just started making [shots]," Dwane Casey said of the Warriors, who went 8-of-11 from three-point range and outscored Toronto 42-15 overall in the fourth quarter. "They were the same shots and we were right there. A couple of plays guys were draped all over them." "But we knew that going in. We knew they would be lethal, that they were going to be hard to stop." The Warriors run was expected, the crowd - largely credited as the best in the league - came to life and the Raptors had nowhere to hide, though they sure tried. In those 12 minutes of basketball, the Raptors played scared. They looked like a team that was unsure of themselves, oof every pass, of every shot, a team that was playing not to lose.dddddddddddd "The thing about it is when they get the momentum then the rim gets wider," said Gay, who had 18 points in the loss. "It gets bigger and they keep throwing shots at it and they keep falling. Its all confidence." Whatever confidence the Raptors had and had worked hard to maintain for 34 minutes was gone. Their offence was almost non-existent. It "stunk", as Gay put it himself. They recorded just one fourth-quarter assist, turned the ball over four times and shot 1-of-7 from beyond the three-point line, many of those shots were forced early in the clock. DeMar DeRozan led the team in scoring with 26 while backcourt mate Kyle Lowry added 20 to go along with nine assists. The momentum began to shift when Lowry was taken out of the game with a head injury late in the third after colliding with Warriors centre Andrew Bogut. Lowry passed concussion tests on the bench and then again after the game but by the time he re-entered in the fourth the Raptors lead was shrinking at a rapid pace. "I just wanted to get back out there and see if I could help the team," Lowry said. "I didnt make any shots and I didnt really help the team. They made a hell of a run against us." The crowd didnt help Torontos cause. "I couldnt hear my defence," Lowry admitted. "I couldnt hear my guys out there. I mean honestly, that crowd, I really couldnt hear." The Raptors first half was as good as theyve played all year, for what its worth. Their 65 points were the most theyve scored in a half this season. They led by 17 at the break, shot 60 per cent and out-rebounded the home team 25-11. Amir Johnson, who came off the bench for the second straight game, looked like his old self. Johnson had 14 of his 16 points, on 6-of-7 shooting in the first half. Toronto has now dropped four straight, with two more games to go on the road before returning home to face San Antonio, the defending Western Conference champs. The schedule gets tougher before it gets any easier and with GM Masai Ujiri watching and waiting, time is not a luxury they can afford to waste. Tuesdays was an embarrassing loss and one thats hard to justify without making excuses, something this team is no longer supposed to be doing. It was the type of loss - for all the talk about moving on and getting the next one - that sticks with a player, a coach, a franchise. It could be the type of haunting, season-defining loss this same team experienced on the road a year ago. ' ' '
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- When Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost goes to the mound, the pitcher normally goes to the clubhouse to start icing his arm. Yost visited Jason Vargas on the mound in the ninth inning after Kyle Seagers two-out double, but opted to leave him in the game. Two batters later Dustin Ackley singled home Seager with the go-ahead run as the Seattle Mariners beat the Royals 2-1. "Vargas said, Im in great shape. I can get us through this inning, " Yost said. He could not. After Stefen Romeros infield bad hop single, which second baseman Pedro Ciriaco bobbled, Yost thought again of removing Vargas before facing Ackley, who entered in the seventh as a pinch runner. "It is lefty-on-lefty and Ackley hadnt swung the bat all day," Yost said. So he again stuck with Vargas. "If it works out, you are smart," Yost said. "If it doesnt, youre the dumbest guy in the stadium. I was the dumbest guy in the stadium." Ackleys single to right on a 2-2 count scored Seager. Ackley is 5 for 10 off Jason Vargas (7-3), who took the loss. "He (Yost) just asked me if I could get him, and I said, yeah, Vargas said. "There wasnt a whole lot more than that. I felt fine, I felt great in the ninth inning. Just a little bit of bad luck got us and I think we all know what happened after that." It was 91 degrees and humid for the first pitch, but Vargas did not use that as an excuse. "I mean, its hot," Vargas said. "I dont think theres any other way around it. I dont think you can feel sorry for yourself out there just because its hot. You know what you signed up for. You know what Kansas City summers are like." After retiring the first dozen Royals, Chris Young yielded a home run to Alex Gordon to leadoff the fifth to tie the score at 1. Young gave up back-to-back singles to Salvador Perez and Justin Maxwell after Gordons team-leading ninth home run. Perez, however, was out trying to stretch his into a double. "Hes really tough to pick the ball up," said Eric Hosmer, who went 0-for-4. "Hes throwing 84-85 miles per hour, but he has such a long arm and his release point is so close to you thats it really hard to pick up. Hes been real consistent for those guys." The Mariners bunched three hits leading off the third with Cole Gillespies single to centre scoring Brad Miller, who began the inning with a bunt single and stopped at second on James Jones single. Young, a 35-year-old right-hander who has had three shoulder surgeries including one last June, did not did not sign with the Mariners until March 27 after the Washington Nationals released him in spring training. He was pulled after seven innings, allowing only the run on Gordons blast and three hits. Yoervis Medina (4-1) replaced Young and worked a flawless eighth, striking out two to pick up the victory. He has not allowed a run and only three hits in his past 10 outings, covering 101/3 innings. Fernando Rodney worked the ninth for his 20th save in 22 opportunities, getting Hosmer to ground into a game ending double play. Vargas gave up 10 hits and two runs in 82/3 innings, losing for the first time since May 19. Robinson Cano went 0-for-4 to snap his 21-game road hitting streak, the longest in the majors this season. Paul George Shoes Free Shipping . -- Brad Gushue of St.TORONTO -- If the Toronto Raptors have a preferable post-season opponent, theyre not saying. The Raptors wrap up their record-breaking regular season Wednesday night at New York, and wont know until post-game wholl theyll face in the playoffs. And they insist they dont care. "Were just worried about ourselves," Amir Johnson said after Mondays victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. "We just want to clean up on our mistakes. Whoevers in front of us, were going to play the same way weve been playing all season." The Raptors, who set a franchise record with their 48th win of the season Monday night, will face either the Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards or Charlotte Bobcats when the opening round begins this weekend. The Raptors are tied with the Chicago Bulls for third in the Eastern Conference, but control their own destiny. Theyll clinch the No. 3 seed if they either beat the Knicks on Wednesday, or the Bulls lose at Charlotte. Theyll finish fourth if they lose and Chicago wins. "We havent thought about it or talked about it," guard Kyle Lowry said, about the ramifications of Wednesdays schedule. "Were just going to go out there and play our game." Raptors coach Dwane Casey has been resting his starters -- all-star DeMar DeRozan got the night off Monday. Casey said he would consider resting DeRozan again Wednesday, despite what outcome that might have on the game, and their conference seeding. "Im more worried about us moreso than who we play. Its about us. About our health,, rest, whatever we decide to do in that situation.dddddddddddd If we play Brooklyn, we play Brooklyn, if we play Washington, we play Washington, theres no easy teams left in the playoffs right now, all the teams are very capable," Casey said. "Brooklyn is probably more playoff-ready, but we cant control that and were not going into this game trying to control that. Im more worried about our guys health -- rest if we rest them -- and our rhythm. And its a fine line between the two." While the players might not have a stated preference, fans certainly do, and general consensus is Washington. The Raptors won the season series against the Wizards three games to one. The Raptors lost all three of their games to Charlotte this season, although only by a combined nine points. They split their four games with Brooklyn, but the Nets have that invaluable playoff experience. Five Nets players alone -- Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, Andrei Kirilenko and Joe Johnson -- have 432 playoff appearances combined. The Toronto Raptors: 147. Raptors starters DeRozan, Jonas Valanciunas and Terrence Ross: Zero. The Raptors are making their first playoff appearance since 2007-08. They were beaten in five games by the Orlando Magic. This is the sixth time in the teams 19-year history theyve made the playoffs. Their only series win was in 2000-01 when they beat the New York Knicks three games to two, before losing to the Philadelphia 76ers in seven games in the second round. ' ' '
