LANDOVER Dwayne Haskins Jersey White , Md. (AP) — Kyle Shanahan is in a better place now. After serving as the Washington Redskins‘ offensive coordinator under his dad, Mike Shanahan, from 2010-2013, he returns Sunday to face them as coach of the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.Six years after the Shanahans were fired, the Dan Snyder-owned and Bruce Allen-run Redskins are about to embark on another coaching search. The position might be harder to fill if candidates go to Kyle for advice.Article continues below ...He said the best part of Washington was being able to work with his dad and be around some other good coaches. The worst part? “Everything else.” The 49ers coach paused. “I liked a lot of the players — some good people,” he said.“We’ve accepted what we had to deal with there, and we’ve moved on,” Shanahan said. “We’ll watch other people deal with it.”Shanahan was one of three future NFL head coaches on the Redskins’ staff in 2012 and 2013, along with Sean McVay and Matt LaFleur. McVay took the Rams to the Super Bowl last season, LaFleur is in his first season in charge of the Green Bay Packers, and the three coaches’ teams have combined to go 13-4 this year.Snyder and Allen fired Jay Gruden after the Redskins lost their first five games, and Washington eked out a 17-16 win at the hapless Miami Dolphins last week in interim coach Bill Callahan’s debut. The 5-0 49ers look like justifiable double-digit favorites and are rolling under Shanahan, who has transformed the culture in San Francisco, in part because his time with the Redskins taught him what not to do.“I just learned it’s very important to work with people that have the same intentions and you want to go in the same direction,” Shanahan said. “Football is a very tough game and no matter how close you are with people, there’s adversity that faces everyone and when you lose one game, two games in a row, you know what’s going to be written and everything and (if) people live off that type of stuff, it’s very hard to survive and get through any tough times.“So, you’ve got to make sure people are made of the same stuff you are, that have the same intention, same goals and they’re ready to fight and work through things and see it to the end.”Shanahan, who coached a game with the Niners at FedEx Field two seasons ago, said his well-timed visit this time on Redskins alumni “Homecoming Weekend” is not personal. The only offensive players left from his time with Washington are injured running back Chris Thompson and holdout left tackle Trent Williams.“I’ve moved on with my life in many other ways, and I think my family has also,” Shanahan said. “It’s not an issue. We’ve got our team coming to play their team and we’re looking forward to that.”Shanahan has grown significantly from the introverted, closed-off offensive coordinator he was in Washington to now. Players then appreciated his football acumen, but more goes into being a head coach.“As an OC in Washington, you saw kind of how smart he was, the way he saw the game,” said Houston Texans tight end Logan Paulsen, who played for Shanahan in Washington and San Francisco.“The thing that I thought that was really cool going from Washington to San Francisco was seeing his maturity in terms of talking and dealing with players and different personalities. He was always a very bright football guy and to see his leadership skills really come into his own was really cool to see.”Paulsen said Shanahan exercised patience waiting for the right opportunity to take a head job and “did it on his own time.” With quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo running his offense and one of the best defenses in the league, Shanahan is an early front-runner for coach of the year.“He is a football junkie, and I think guys really respect that,” Paulsen said. “They see kind of the standard that’s set by him in terms of what they need to know and how they need to respond in certain situations Womens Bryce Love Jersey , and I think that’s really special.”Washington’s current offensive coordinator, Kevin O’Connell, could be the coach next season, and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin’s name has been tossed around. Whoever interviews and gets offered the job, Shanahan doesn’t expect to be asked for his thoughts on the organization.“Just look into it, see what the situation is and who you want to work for,” Shanahan said. “Any time you get opportunities you’ve got to look into it, but I’m not there and I don’t know how it is right now. That would be up to that person. I’m probably not the person they want to call on that advice.”Some things to watch when Shanahan’s 49ers visit the Redskins:ROAD WARRIORSAfter going winless on the road last year, the Niners have been outstanding away from home so far this year. They opened the season with back-to-back wins at Tampa Bay and Cincinnati and then won 20-7 last week at Los Angeles against McVay and the defending NFC champion Rams. San Francisco hasn’t had a winning record on the road since going 6-2 in 2013 on the way to the NFC title game.“I know we didn’t win a road game last season, preseason or regular season, so those plane rides weren’t very fun,” tight end George Kittle said. “Being able to get on those planes and come back with a victory makes it so much more fun.”The Redskins haven’t won at home since Week 7 in 2018.RUN, RUN, RUN?Callahan promised to commit to the ground game after taking over for Gruden, and boy, did he. Adrian Peterson rushed 23 times for 118 yards at Miami.San Francisco’s run defense might force more throws from still starting QB Case Keenum.“We’ll do whatever we need to do,” Callahan said. “Of course we want to establish the run and we want to keep that identity just like everybody else around the league, but they’re good.”FILL-IN TACKLESThe Niners managed to win last week despite playing two backups at tackle. Rookie Justin Skule made his third straight start at left tackle in place of Joe Staley, while Daniel Brunskill got his first career start at right tackle in place of Mike McGlinchey. San Francisco was still able to move the ball fairly consistently without altering the offense too much.“I thought the two rookies did a great job stepping in and filling their roles,” Garoppolo said. “Those guys are just battling up front. What they do in the run game and pass game is so impressive.”McLAURIN MADNESSWashington’s Terry McLaurin is the first rookie with 50-plus yards receiving in each of his first five NFL games since Terry Glenn in 1996. McLaurin leads all rookies with 23 catches, 408 yards and five touchdowns and is already the Redskins’ best offensive player.“He’s done a really good job for them stepping in as a rookie, which is rare for receivers,” Shanahan said. “But you’ve got a very good football player and he’s tough and the game’s not too big.”DOMINANT DSan Francisco’s defense has played at a high level all season but might have been at its best last week. The Niners are allowing a league-low 150.2 yards per game passing, and rank second in points allowed (12.8 per game) and total defense (237.4 yards per game) thanks to a dominant defensive line that has put heavy pressure on opposing passers. San Francisco allowed just 48 net yards passing last week against the Rams and held Los Angeles to no conversions on third or fourth down. Washington coach Jay Gruden has yet to name a Week One starting quarterback, and he feels no compulsion to do so in the immediate future.“ Gruden told reporters on Tuesday. “I think it’s important to let these guys go out and play and continue to compete. We’ll continue to let them play and see what happens Thursday.”Washington plays the Falcons in Atlanta on Thursday night. With Colt McCoy, who continues to be listed as the No. 1 quarterback on the unofficial depth chart, still recovering from last year’s broken leg, it’s down to veteran Case Keenum and rookie Dwayne Haskins, with all indications being that Keenum will get the nod — especially with the first three games that count against the Eagles, Cowboys, and Bears.Regardless of who it is, the rush is coming soon. The first game is only 19 days away.
Steelers expecting all their injured players to practice in some capacity before Browns game The Pittsburgh Steelers held their first official practice session of the 2018 season on Monday and it seems Le’Veon Bell was not the only player missing out as the team prepared to face the Cleveland Browns. Tight end Vance McDonald remained sidelined as he battles a foot injury that caused him to miss most of training camp James Conner Jersey White , but there were some positive signs for the rest of the injured names on the roster. According to Joe Rutter of TribLive, Ramon Foster, Mike Hilton, Morgan Burnett and Xavier Grimble were all active participants in training on Monday, and there is a fair chance that at least one or two of them should be able to play on Sunday. When speaking to the media on Tuesday Womens Jerome Bettis Jersey , Mike Tomlin seemed optimistic about the overall shape of his team, suggesting the squad was in “pretty good” health. Hopeful that all the injured players on the roster would be at practice in some capacity this week, the door remains open for each of them to dress in Week 1.The Steelers must release their first official injury report of the week on Wednesday, and that report should give a more accurate picture of the state of health of some of the long-term injured. When Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier was stretchered off the field with a severe spinal cord injury on December 4, 2017 Jerome Bettis Jersey , there were fears that he would never walk again. On Friday night, Shazier showed off perhaps the most important step in his remarkable recovery. him dancing with his bride at the reception, moving around on the dance floor gracefully and not giving any hint that he had previously been paralyzed. The Steelers have placed Shazier on the reserve/physically unable to perform list for this season, and they’ve said there is no chance he will be able to play in 2019. But Shazier says his ultimate goal is to play football again James Conner Jersey , and seeing video like that from his wedding makes it hard to doubt him. It’s a tribute to modern medicine and Shazier’s hard work that he has reached the point where he can celebrate his marriage on his own terms.<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en">About a year and a half ago, Ryan Shazier was told he had a 20% chance of ever walking again. Initially host Mike Florio just put out that Amari Cooper had set his goal for this season at 2000 yards receiving — which we found a bit funny considering no receiver has ever had that many receiving yards and Cooper has never come anywhere close to it.Coop said a lot more than that, however, a good portion of which was about why Oakland was not the place for him making his trade to Dallas a welcome one. The release of that interview we initially missed, but the Dallas Morning News picked up this past weekend. One thing I have long said of Coop is that he has a lot of potential he was just not reaching. He never seemed happy in Oakland. It showed in his lack of aggression on the field, his frequent disappearances from games, and in his demeanor off the field.Following his trade, I instantly lauded it as a win for the Raiders. Soon after seeing how he was playing his best football in Dallas, it was clear it was a win for both sides of the trade. The Raiders got a first round pick and the Cowboys got the best version of Coop the Raiders were not getting. The question was whether this was Coop’s fault or the Raiders for not using him properly. I’ll let him tell it.“I think the change of scenery was really necessary,” said Cooper. “I really, honestly, don’t think if I would’ve stayed with the Raiders last season that I would’ve been able to flourish and reach some heights that I was able to reach as a Cowboy. So, it was definitely necessary.“I don’t think it was a good fit for me. I don’t think I was really able to showcase my skills there for whatever reason, I’ll call it extenuating circumstances. But for whatever reason, I wasn’t able to reach my heights and I kind of knew that I needed to be gone in order to do some of the things that I wanted to do as an NFL player.’Coop’s best season was his second season in 2016 in which he went for 1153 yards. After that his numbers took a tumble. Down to 680 yards in 14 games in 2017 and on pace for another career low in 2018 with just 280 yards in six games. In those first few games Cooper said he knew he would need to leave in order to reach his potential.”I felt like there are things that I wanted to do out there on the field during the games, certain plays that I wanted to be called and certain routes that I wanted to run that just weren’t a part of the game plan,” said Cooper. The result proves his point, if even perhaps that it was a self fulfilling prophecy. In nine games with the Cowboys, Cooper saved his season and put up a career best 80.6 yards per game to surpass 1000 yards on the season and ultimately head back to the Pro Bowl for the third time in four NFL seasons.Last season was the honeymoon for Coop in Dallas. That will probably extend into this season. And at some point in the next 8 months, that will mean a new big time contract. Good for him and for the Cowboys if that comes to pass. That’s the best place for him. Oakland wasn’t that place regardless. The Raiders will hope their selection of Johnathan Abram at the 27 spot from the Cowboys makes it more worth it to them as well as Antonio Brown is more worth number one receiver money.Follow @LeviDamien Jon Gruden had a clear roster-building strategy going into the 2018 season with the Oakland Raiders, and that was to fill the roster with cheap veterans who would help him and defensive coordinator..."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Raiders StoriesScheduleRosterStatsYahoo Raiders NewsYahoo Raiders Team PageYahoo Raiders ReportYahoo Raiders Depth ChartYahoo Raiders TransactionsYahoo Raiders PhotosOdds About Masthead Community Guidelines StubHub ✕Raiders sport one of NFL’s youngest rosters after having oldest group in 2018New,41commentsPDTShareTweetShareShareRaiders sport one of NFL’s youngest rosters after having oldest group in 2018Kirby Lee-USA TODAY SportsJon Gruden had a clear roster-building strategy going into the 2018 season with the Oakland Raiders, and that was to fill the roster with cheap veterans who would help him and defensive coordinator Paul Guenther implement their systems. This resulted in the Raiders having the oldest 53-man roster in the NFL, That’s not a long-term strategy and never was designed to be, and it was been totally turned upside-down this year as the current Raiders roster is incredibly young Bo Jackson Jersey , with an average age of 25.35 years (yes, I did this math myself thank you very much). For reference, the youngest team in the NFL last season after the 53-man cuts was the Cincinnati Bengals, who were on average 25.2 years old, and the Browns came in second with an average age of 25.3 years old, identical to the Raiders’ current 90-man roster. The Raiders’ average age in 2018 was 27.4, which was nearly six months older on average than the 31st oldest team, the Atlanta Falcons whose average age was 26.9.Oakland also had the oldest team in 2014, with a veteran lineup surrounding rookies Derek Carr and Khalil Mack for an average age of 27 even, but made the playoffs in 2016 with the 13th-youngest roster of 26 years even on average. The Raiders are mostly made up currently of players 27 years old and younger, and have only six players over the age of 29 on their roster, one of whom is the long snapper, Andrew DePaola, and none of whom are over the age of 31. week roster included aged veterans Donald Penn, Reggie Nelson, Jordy Nelson, Marshawn Lynch and several other players who were long in the tooth. The only Raiders over the age of 29 who are expected to be major contributors this season are Doug Martin and Antonio Brown, both of whom are 30 years old. Rookies Josh Jacobs and Maxx Crosby are still 21, while Johnathan Abram and Clelin Ferrell are 22. All four are expected to see plenty of playing time and be major factors in 2019.The roster won’t stay this young after cutdown day to the 53-man roster. Several of the rookies and players under 23 years old won’t make it or will be placed on the practice squad, and that will skew the average a bit higher. But some of the older players might not make it either, and it’s unlikely, mathematically speaking, that the average age of the Raiders will be over 26. That will still make them one of the youngest teams in the league and on paper one of the teams most set up for long-term success.

Whether you are an eye test kind of fan or a stats junkie Bradley Chubb Jersey White , there is little you can argue to say the Denver Broncos haven’t at least found their quarterback for 2020. Drew Lock has a lot of work to do, but every one of us should feel encouraged by his first five games in the NFL. Broncos President of Football Operations/GM John Elway echoed that sentiment and all but confirmed that 2020 is going to be Lock’s year. “I don’t see any options right now,” Elway said when asked if Lock would be the starter in 2020. “Obviously, he finished and did a heck of a job and won four out of five games and played well, but he still has a long way to go. He has a lot of work to do. We’re excited about where Drew is. I don’t like to show our hand, but I think it’s unrealistic to say that we’re going a different direction.”Credit to Lock’s development should go to Offensive Coordinator Rich Scangarello. While Lock still have some lower body throwing mechanics that could get him into trouble down the road, he has come a long way in his first season and a big part of that has been the work Scangarello has done to tailor playcalling to Lock’s strengths.I think over time, especially as Drew started playing, that it was good relationship,” Head Coach Vic Fangio said of Lock’s relationship with Scangarello. “I think they had a good trust between each other. I think the results, although they weren’t record setting, the results were good.”Drew Lock has enjoyed working with Scangarello too and for those two to continue to build on that will be a key component to offensive success in 2020 and beyond. “I think it was an awesome relationship that we had,” Lock said of Scangarello. “We talked about it today. I think it’s going to keep growing into next year into where he—it wasn’t easy for me at the start. He didn’t press me. He didn’t push it on me too hard. Obviously when I needed to be on my stuff, he corrected me and said, ‘You need to pick this up. You need to do this.’ The way he coached me this year I was super thankful. I told him this morning that I wouldn’t have been to this point, felt comfortable without the way he made me feel about who I was as a quarterback and just the way he coached me. I’m super grateful for having him in that room and having him on this team.”The success Lock enjoyed came largely from how well the team responded to him. It seemed like the veterans rallied around the young rookie and, most importantly, winning football games kept the fun ride going. Lock’s approach was all about making football fun again and that was like a contagion that spread. “I thought we’d bring a different side to it—let loose have some fun,” Lock said. “I think everyone else in the locker room and locker rooms everywhere too are wanting to have fun, wanting to be loose about it. Someone just has to take it by the horns. I think we’re starting to do that here which has been really, really fun. It’s just a different vibe. We’re not going to be stuck up and arrogant about it, but at the same time you don’t want to be super tight on the sidelines. You want to have fun and just be ourselves. and a good amount of people watching doesn’t mean you can’t be having some fun.”The Denver Broncos are trending up, because they finally have a quarterback that can make plays. After four seasons, we should all know how important that position is. It’s vital in today’s league.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard keeps collecting draft chips. He figures it gives him better odds to hit it big.One year after moving back three spots in the first round and making four second-round selections Dwayne Haskins Jersey White , Ballard did it again Thursday by sending the No. 26 overall pick to the Washington Redskins for two second-round picks. Indy will now select at No. 34, courtesy of last year’s deal with the New York Jets, at No. 46, thanks to the Redskins, and at No. 59, their own pick on Friday, plus they’ve added the Redskins’ second-round pick in 2020.“It was just a chance to pick up a 2020 second-round pick, we thought the value was good and we thought there was still good enough value to be there in the second round to move back,” Ballard said. “We think the ability of having three seconds, we thought that was the strength of how we had it lined up.”It’s all part of a plan.Ballard knew it would be difficult to replicate last year’s successes. He had five picks in the first two rounds, found starters with each of his first three choices and Indy’s first two selections — left guard Quenton Nelson and linebacker Darius Leonard — became the first rookie teammates to become first-team All-Pros since Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus with the Chicago Bears in 1965.At Monday’s pre-draft news conference, Ballard told reporters that the Colts had eight players targeted in the first round. And though he acknowledged some were still available when Indy went on the clock, he still opted for Plan B: Moving out of the first round for better value in the second. In fact, he hinted at the prospect of a trade when he joked with reporters that he might not speak again until Friday.“I kind of had a feeling (Monday), I don’t know why,” he said. “Sometimes you just have a feeling. I had a feeling we would have a chance to get out and it would be the best thing for us long term.”He may not be finished dealing, either. In three seasons with the Colts, he has now made eight trades involving trade picks though he knew this one might not be well-received.“We’ve got a room full of people, we’ve got you all sitting here, I get it, everyone wants you to pick a player,” he said. “But I’m pretty patient. I don’t panic, we don’t panic, we stay true to what we’re looking at on the board.”The Colts now have 10 picks this weekend including their own third-rounder, No. 89 overall, on Friday.__ Jarrett Stidham, QBSchool: Auburn | Conference: SECCollege Experience: RS Junior | Age: 22Height / Weight: 6-3 / 215lbsProjected Draft Status: 3rd-4th roundNFL Comparison: Derek CarrCollege StatisticsPlayer OverviewJarrett Stidham has had a roller coaster collegiate career, to say the least. He was the number one dual-threat quarterback coming out of high school in Texas. Stidham committed to Baylor where he played under then-rockstar head coach Art Briles. As a true freshman Womens Bryce Love Jersey , he played in 10 games, throwing for 12 touchdowns, 2 interceptions and 1,265 yards with a 69% completion percentage and 11.6 Y/A. In short, he looked liked an upcoming star. After the Baylor scandal that pretty much nuked their football program, Stidham transferred to JUCO for a year. He then transferred to Auburn to restart his college career. In 2017, he was named second team All-SEC and SEC Newcomer of the Year. Stidham was a projected first-round pick by some, but he decided to return to Auburn for his redshirt junior season. 2018 was a hugely disappointing season for Auburn as a team. Stidham’s stats declined, but didn’t crater. Auburn lacked 1) talented weapons on offense and 2) offensive adaptability; many blamed head coach Gus Malzahn for their woes. Stidham is a talented player with an impressive pedigree, but has failed to capture the attention of the draft community largely due to issues out of his control. StrengthsThrows a catchable ball with nice touch and anticipation; plenty of zip, but doesn’t possess a cannonGood accuracy to place the ball where he wants on a receiver or lead him between zones; above-average deep ball accuracyPlus athleticism as a quarterback; multi-sport athlete (basketball, track); can do damage with his legsQuality size and build, although not prototypicalRecognized as a leader by coaches, teammates, named team captain and made decision to play in final bowl gameWeaknessesOften panics when initial look isn’t there; can lead to negative plays or careless turnoversHappy feet in the pocket causes poor accuracy and delivery mechanics — needs to slow his footwork down and maintain a stable platformMediaHow He’d Fit on the RedskinsA lot of the negative traits scouts attribute to Stidham can be explained, in part, by the predictability of Auburn’s offense. Head coach Gus Malzahn is a huge fan of receiver screens and shot plays, which meant when the initial look was covered, the quarterback often had nowhere to go with the ball. play or forcing throws, shoddy pocket presence and a sped-up internal clock. There were bright spots, though, and Stidham showed he could continually move the ball despite the offense’s limitations. In his final college game, Stidham & Co. throttled Purdue 63-14 in the Music City Bowl, and he threw for 373 yards and five touchdowns. For all the flak that Gruden gets, I think he is a better passing game coordinator than Malzahn and has answers built into his offense. He can also work with Stidham’s athletic ability to move him outside the pocket. He’s exhibited good leadership qualities in two years at Auburn to lead a group of men. At worst I see Stidham sticking around as a backup, and his ceiling is a mid-level starter in the NFL.
With superstar edge rusher Khalil Mack gone Derek Carr Jersey White , the Oakland Raiders defense is worse than bad and head coach Jon Gruden is looking for someone to build the defense around. Punter Marquette King is gone and the Raiders have had the worst field position in the NFL this year because they haven’t had a punter that can flip the field. But in theRaiders’ 20-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday, the defense actually had a decent game while getting no help from the offense. Helping matters was the punting game giving the Chargers poor field position to start drives. Much credit goes to the Raiders two 5th-round rookies; defensive tackle Maurice Hurst and punter Johnny Townsend. Hurst notched his team-high third sack of the season, forcing the Chargers to settle for a field goal on the drive. For the game, He added four tackles (all solo). Hurst started the season with 2.0 sacks in the first four games but went his previous four games without a sack. Sunday’s performance has the rookie believing his unit is getting things together.“I think we’re extremely close, but it’s hard to say much without results,” Hurst said after Sunday’s game. “We’re just going to keep believing in this team and believing in each other. We’re focused on what we can control.”Townsend’s career day started with a bang as he took a fake punt 42 yards on fourth-and-4 of the opening drive. The run set a franchise record for the longest carry by a punter, the longest carry by a rookie punter in the NFL and ranks fourth among punters in NFL history. As for his real job, Townsend punted three times for 162 yards and a career-best 54.0 average, And that included a 57-yarder that pinned the Chargers inside the 20-yard line. Raider Nation has been waiting to see Townsend flip the field with that big leg he showed in college and he finally delivered. “I have always said that I really believe in that kid,” Gruden told the media Sunday about his punter. “In that fake punt you can see that he is one of our fastest players. He is a tremendous athlete. He took his medicine for awhile like a lot of us, but he is going to be a really good punter for us.”Hurst and Townsend shined brightest but the Raiders are playing a lot of rookies these days.Left tackle Kolton Miller (Round 1), defensive tackle P.J. Hall (Round 2) and defensive end Arden Key (Round 3) are all playing prominent roles on the defense. Cornerback Nick Nelson (Round 4) and linebacker Jason Cabinda (undrafted) got plenty of run themselves Sunday and Gruden liked what he saw. “I felt pretty good. I thought we had a lot of rookies play and play well,” Gruden said. ”I thought Jason Cabinda had extended action and made plays. I thought Nick Nelson made some plays. We had pass rushes at times. So we did make improvement, but we have a lot of improvement to make. And it starts with me.”The rookies now have something to build on. The Oakland Raiders are upset about the lengthy suspension handed down to linebacker Vontaze Burfict for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Indianapolis tight end Jack Doyle.Burfict was suspended Monday for the final 12 games of the season and any playoff games for “repeated violations of unnecessary roughness rules” in the most severe penalty ever handed out by the NFL for an on-field infraction.Coach Jon Gruden said Wednesday after the team’s practice in London that he had expressed his disagreement with NFL Vice President of football operations Jon Runyan over the punishment and hopes it will be reduced on appeal.“He knows how I feel Womens Derek Carr Jersey ,” Gruden told reporters in London. “It hurts our team really bad and I’m anxious to see what the appeal says. I’m not happy about it at all and I don’t want to say anything else. I’m obviously upset about it.”Burfict has been suspended twice previously for on-field hits, serving a three-game ban in 2016 and another three-game suspension the following year that was reduced from five games on appeal. The previous longest suspension served for an on-field infraction was a five-game ban Tennessee’s Albert Haynesworth got in 2006 for kicking and stomping on Cowboys center Andre Gurode’s face, leading to 30 stitches.Burfict was flagged for unnecessary roughness and ejected from the Raiders’ game against the Colts on Sunday after a blow to Doyle’s head early in the second quarter.Runyan said in a letter to Burfict that there were no mitigating circumstances on the play and his long history led to the punishment.“Your contact was unnecessary, flagrant and should have been avoided,” Runyan wrote.Quarterback Derek Carr called Burfict “one of the most misunderstood people in the NFL” and said his loss would have a big impact on the Raiders.“When he showed up, he quickly turned into one of my favorite teammates I’ve ever had,” Carr said. “He’s one of the most genuine, awesome people I’ve ever been around. He’s a great teammate, he works his tail off and he’s a great guy to be honest with you. I know that he’s had history at places, but I think people change. I don’t think he was trying to hurt that man. That man was going down, you see it all the time.”Carr said he was particularly frustrated because he believes no consistent standard across the league, pointing to Baltimore cornerback Marlon Humphrey appearing to choke Cleveland receiver Odell Beckham Jr. during a scuffle last week and a helmet-to-helmet hit by New England’s Jonathan Jones that knocked out Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen.“We see other people choking people out and they’re going to play this Sunday. We see people hitting people in the helmets and they’re going to play this Sunday, and Vontaze Burfict won’t play the rest of the year,” Carr said.“I think that’s a little excessive if you ask me. I don’t think it’s fair if we really got to know the guy. If the people making the decisions really knew the guy that we know inside our building, so I’m just being as honest as I can be because that’s who I am. He’s a great person Antonio Brown Raiders Jersey , his heart is broken because he’s not playing football. The guy just wants to play football.”Burfict during his time in Cincinnati was repeatedly suspended by the NFL for egregious hits and violating its policy on performance-enhancers. He was fined regularly for hits that crossed the line, most notably the one to Antonio Brown’s head that helped the Steelers rally for an 18-16 playoff win in the 2015 season. That led to a three-game suspension to start the 2016 season.Burfict then was penalized for a blind-side block against Kansas City fullback Anthony Sherman in the 2017 preseason that led to a five-game suspension that was later reduced to three games.Burfict was also fined $112,000 last season for hits on Brown and James Conner in a game against Pittsburgh.Teammate Tahir Whitehead, who will take over the role as defensive signal caller, said Burfict had worked had to change his reputation.“Understanding and knowing how hard he worked, with the perception that was out there about him, how hard he worked to not be that guy, it’s really frustrating for me to see the penalty that’s been handed down to him,” Whitehead said.“Just have to step it up, we all have to chip in, pull it together and make sure that we play for him now. Just play hard, the way he played the game, making sure that we’re pulling in the same direction.” It was clear which team is coming off a Super Bowl and which is still trying to be competitive." />Skip to main contentclockmenumore-arrownoyesSilver And Black Pride homepageHorizontal - WhiteSilver And Black Pridean Oakland Raiders communityFollow Silver And Black Pride online:Follow Silver And Black Pride on TwitterFollow Silver And Black Pride on FacebookLog in or sign upLog InSign UpSite searchSearchSearchSilver And Black Pride main menuFanpostsFanshotsRaidersOddsAboutMastheadCommunity GuidelinesStubHubMoreAll 321 blogs on Horizontal - WhiteFanposts Fanshots Raiders StoriesScheduleRosterStatsYahoo Raiders NewsYahoo Raiders Team PageYahoo Raiders ReportYahoo Raiders Depth ChartYahoo Raiders TransactionsYahoo Raiders PhotosOdds About Masthead Community Guidelines StubHub ✕Raiders training camp 2019 day 10 recap: Derek Carr tries to ‘set the tone’ vs Rams and gets picked while Jared Goff has his wayNew,261commentsIt was clear which team is coming off a Super Bowl and which is still trying to be competitive.PDTShare this storyShare this on FacebookShare this on TwitterShareAll sharing optionsShareAll sharing options for:Raiders training camp 2019 day 10 recap: Derek Carr tries to ‘set the tone’ vs Rams and gets picked while Jared Goff has his wayTwitterFacebookRedditPocketFlipboardEmailThe day the Raiders have been waiting for was here. The Rams were in the house and they were finally going to test themselves against a world class team. One of the storylines of the first part of Raiders’ camp is how great Tyrell Williams and Derek Carr look. Then they faced the Rams aaaand not so much.Right from the first snap, Carr went to the well Womens Bo Jackson Jersey , sending Williams deep and putting the ball in the air for him. And there was Aqib Talib to pick it off. Talib knows Carr well.Carr has had to face him at least once per season in his five-year career. The first four were as a member of the rival broncos, which means usually he faced him twice. Last year as a member of the Rams. Carr didn’t fool the All Pro and five-time Pro Bowler.“The first play I jacked the ball up really to set the tone and you hope to come down with it and they make the play,” said Carr. “That kind of stuff is going to happen. It’s not alarming to anyone in the meeting room but there are stuff that we need to correct off the film and need to do better.”Needless to say, Carr was not able to set the tone early. Talib snatched away that tone like it was a gold chain around Michael Crabtree’s neck.As it happens, on the final play of scrimmages, Carr and Williams would try again to hook up on a bomb. This time Williams got behind Nickell Roby-Coleman and Carr found him... but he dropped it.Those two plays bookended a lackluster day for an offense which is still without top target Antonio Brown and number one tight end Darren Waller. “We got a couple guys that are out, but that’s next guy up,” Carr said. “When that happens we got to have our best guys be our best guys. That gets tough when people are taking them away in practice and things like that. Definitely that will be a recurring theme in every practice.”For the defense’s part, there were some positive signs. Though not many.Rams starting quarterback Jared Goff carved them up for the most part. There were only a handful of passes defensed from the Raiders. One came from Johnathan Abram on a deep shot for tight end Gerald Everett. Another was Gareon Conley who knocked down a deep shot up the right sideline for tight end Tyler Higbee. Defensive backs making plays on tight ends isn’t really a great accomplishment. Even though for the Raiders it might be.Lamarcus Joyner made a play against his former team. Goff stood in the pocket so long, the play would have been over long before that, so it wouldn’t have counted anyway, but Joyner didn’t give up on it. He stuck with Brandin Cooks the whole way and when Goff tried to connect with his speedy receiver, Joyner knocked it down Then stood and smiled at Cooks as if to say ‘remember me?’ And that was about it for the positives. Two of the biggest plays of the day for the Rams, the Raiders were so out of position, it was impossible to tell who was supposed to be there. Both resulted in wide open catches and long touchdowns up the left sideline.Trayvon Mullen gave up a long catch to Michael Thomas Womens Antonio Brown Jersey , Curtis Riley gave up a touchdown catch at the right pylon to Robert Woods, Karl Joseph gave up a touchdown in the back of the end zone to Gerald Everett — though that was a brilliant throw by Goff —, Gareon Conley gave up a long catch on a slant to Robert Woods, and Nicholas Morrow gave up a long catch and run to tight end Johnny Mundt.Despite the struggles, Abram thinks they did some good things.“Pretty much that we can play with anybody,” Abram said of what they showed today. “That’s one thing I’ll say is we can play with anybody. If we can go against one of the best offenses in the league and go out there and compete the way we did, then we can compete with anybody.”There were plays the Raiders defenders made, but most were with Blake Bortles in at quarterback. The Raiders secondary is supposed to be much improved this season. o be able to go blow for blow with one of the top offenses in the league, you hope they would have made more plays. One more day to make corrections on both sides of the ball and come out of this feeling better about themselves.Defensive play of the dayTahir Whitehead and Erik Harris were both flying around making plays. Whitehead came up to make the stop on Brandin Cooks for a loss on an end around. Then a few plays later he was there to chase down Malolm Brown on a run that was stretched out wide.Harris had a play where he came around the edge to make a stop on a run play. Another play he blitzed up the gut and got his hands up to bat down a Bortles pass attempt. And he broke up a pass from Bortles to tight end Gerald Everett in the back left corner of the end zone.Catch of the dayNot much to report here. The best play probable came on a bubble screen to Hunter Renfrow which he took and streaked up the sideline for about 25 yards.InjuriesAntonio Brown (feet), Darren Waller (shoulder), Gabe Wright (knee), Eddie Vanderdoes (concussion). KANSAS CITY Antonio Brown Raiders Jersey , Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could have taken this week off, assured of not only their third consecutive AFC West title but also the No. 1 seed in the playoffs before the Oakland Raiders came to town.Instead, they'll have everything on the line Sunday. The Chiefs blew a fourth-quarter lead against the Chargers a couple weeks ago, and last week they lost a shootout in Seattle. They are now 0-2 with a chance to clinch the division, and they risk falling all the way to the No. 5 seed in the playoffs if they can't defeat one of their longtime rivals. "Last time I checked we are in a pretty good position here," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "I know it can become a woe-is-me thing and this is how it happens, it can be a negative. I feel like throughout the team, though, the guys understand where they're at and what they need to do to fix it."The objective is to win games," Reid said. "We have one game left here in the regular season."Now, the Chiefs long ago locked up a spot in the postseason, so that won't be an issue when they kick off against Oakland at the same time the Chargers are playing the Broncos. But what happens over the ensuing hours could potentially have massive playoff ramifications. If the Chiefs (11-4) win, they get a path through Arrowhead Stadium. If they lose and the Chargers win, Los Angeles vaults to the top of the AFC West and the No. 1 seed.If both teams lose, the Patriots or Texans would have a chance to snare the top spot, and Kansas City could conceivably go from having a bye to a wild-card matchup next weekend."It's a very small margin between winning and losing," Reid said. "Very, very small. The pace can change quickly. So it's important the attitude is right, and Kansas City has had a lot of ups and downs. Are players and coaches willing to make a change? We have an opportunity to do that."The Raiders (4-11) would like nothing more than to play spoiler. They've lost seven of their last eight against the Chiefs, including a 40-33 shootout in Oakland earlier this season. But despite a season's worth of turmoil with no end in sight — who knows where they will play next season? — the Raiders have quietly performed better. They beat the Steelers and Broncos in recent weeks and coach Jon Gruden believes his vast rebuilding job is making progress."We're trying to get some momentum for our offseason Womens Bo Jackson Jersey ," Gruden said. "This is our first year here. I know the expectations were high for some, but we're laying the foundation for how we want to play."All we can do is keep developing our team," he said, "and fight like hell for 60 minutes."As the Raiders and Chiefs prepare to meet, here are some key story lines:HEALTH CHECKThe Chiefs remain without wide receiver Sammy Watkins because of a sore foot, but they hope to get cornerback Kendall Fuller back from a broken hand. Their defense was shredded by the Seahawks when he decided at game time that he would be unable to go. "That's a day-to-day thing," Reid said, "but I think he feels a lot better."HEALTH CHECK, PART 2Raiders left guard Kelechi Osemele returned last week against Denver and instantly upgraded the entire offense. He did not allow a pressure in 31 passing snaps and helped pave the way for Doug Martin to run for a season-best 107 yards. "It's always good to be able to do that," said Osemele, who'd been out with a knee injury. "It's a great feeling, man."CARLSON'S KICKSOne of the few bright spots for Oakland this season has been rookie kicker Daniel Carlson, who is perfect on extra points and 15 of 16 on field goals since signing in October. The fifth-round pick was cut by Minnesota after missing all three field goals in Week 2, but he could break Sebastian Janikowski's franchise record for field-goal accuracy in a season set in 2012. "To me that's something you enjoy later in life," he said. "You enjoy it in the offseason a little."STEPPING UPOakland's rookie tackles Kolton Miller and Brandon Parker have taken plenty of heat as the offensive line has failed to protect Derek Carr much of the season. "I know Pro Football Focus has some statistics that aren't always positive," Gruden said, "but they played very good, and not just pass protecting but run blocking and handling the audibles. We have seen a lot of progress there."SLOW STARTSOne common thread during the Chiefs' late-season slide: slow starts by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who nonetheless remains a top candidate for league MVP. He was 1 of 7 out of the gates against Seattle, though he bounced back to have another solid game."It's all about the next play. The next play you always have an opportunity to do better Bo Jackson Jersey ," Mahomes said. "As long as you go out there and execute the next play, that's the best thing you can do." ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Jon Gruden was welcomed back to Oakland as a returning hero when he got hired for his second stint as coach of the Raiders. There was a party he hosted for fans at a local sports bar, loud ovations in the preseason and a heightened level of excitement that Gruden could get the Raiders back to being the consistent winner they were during his first stint that started two decades ago.The reality has been far different after two weeks. Fans are frustrated by the trade of the team’s best player, Khalil Mack, the crowd booed at the end of a lopsided, season-opening loss, and an 0-2 start have raised questions about how long it will take to turn the Raiders into a winner.“We’re going to keep building our football team. Whether that translates into one win or four wins or any wins, I’m not going to make any predictions,” Gruden said.“I want to continue to play good, hardnose football. Keep improving. Keep improving and good things will happen. I’m not going to sit here and make any predictions about anything other than we’re going to play hard and provide the best effort we can.”Gruden’s not alone when it comes to getting off to slow starts in a new tenure as coach. All seven new coaches lost on the opening weekend for the worst debut performance in NFL history for a new class of coaches. There was some improvement in Week 2 as Indianapolis’ Frank Reich, Chicago’s Matt Nagy and Tennessee’s Mike Vrabel all got into the win column for the first time in their head coaching careers.“It always helps to win,” Vrabel said. “When you’re trying to explain things to a team, or trying to get a message across, there has to be some tangible evidence to say, ‘Hey, when we do these things we give ourselves a chance to win.'”The other three new coaches are in the same boat as Gruden, searching for that elusive first win and facing questions about whether they were the right choice for the job.The New York Giants have looked listless on offense in their first two games under former Minnesota offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, scoring only one TD in the opener and not making it into the end zone until 1:27 remained in a 20-13 loss to Dallas this past week. It’s the defense that’s been the problem in Detroit under former New England defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. The Lions have allowed 78 points in losses to the Jets and San Francisco, the third most in franchise history after two games.“I certainly understand their frustration and we’re doing everything we can possible to make sure we get this turned around https://www.raiderslockerroom.com/authentic-antonio-brown-jersey ,” Patricia said of Detroit fans who have celebrated just one playoff win in the past 60 years.“I expect to win every single week and go out and we work extremely hard to make sure we get that done, and we have to keep pushing forward.”The Cardinals have been perhaps the worst team of all under Steve Wilks, getting outscored 58-6 the first two weeks against Washington and the Rams and failing even to cross midfield until the next-to-last play of the game in Sunday’s 34-0 drubbing against Los Angeles. There are already questions about coordinator Mike McCoy’s status in Arizona and about when rookie quarterback Josh Rosen should take over from Sam Bradford.“We all need to look in the mirror and check ourselves and figure out, ‘What can I do to help this team win games?'” Wilks said.“I don’t think your actual long-term vision changes and your expectations, but you have to be able to adapt in this league. We’re looking to make changes. We’re looking to make this thing better and make it right.“So, to say that we’re satisfied, (to say that) I’m satisfied to where we are right now not scoring a touchdown in two games and having a lack of production on the offensive side of the ball, no. We’ve got to make some changes.”One of the problems for these new coaches is the reason they were hired in the first place was that something was wrong with their franchises. The Titans are the only one of the seven teams to make the playoffs in 2017 and the Lions are the only other that had a winning record. The Cardinals are in a major transition after the retirement of coach Bruce Arians and quarterback Carson Palmer, while the Raiders, a year ago. With those recent struggles and coaches who are bringing in new assistants and systems, there is also the usual roster turnover that comes with a new regime.Implementing that is even harder now than it was in the past because of limited practice time in the offseason and a league-wide move to cut back on playing time for regulars in the exhibition season.“Everybody’s learning, every week we’re going to learn and get better and make improvements. That’s what we have to do,” Giants quarterback Eli Manning said.“When you have a new offense, new players, new guys coming in, there is a learning curve to it so we’ve just got to keep grinding and keep preparing and don’t get down. Have the desire to get better.“If we all want that, we all have that, and we’ve got to make the improvements that the coaches are giving us, and that will give us a better opportunity to win the game.”
Training camp and the preseason bring plenty of questions John Elway Jersey , including whether and to what extent a given team will divide reps among multiple running backs. In Denver, Philip Lindsay emerged as the top option a year ago, despite being an updrafted rookie. But that was with a different coaching staff. Now, with Vic Fangio running the show and Rich Scangarello coordinating the offense, Royce Freeman could be a bigger factor.“I think Royce and Lindsay are perfect complements,” Scangarello told reporters on Sunday. “They kind of remind me of [Falcons running backs] Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman in Atlanta. They have different skill sets. They are both talented in their own way. They are both able to be used with their strengths so that they can be the best they can be. Royce is big, and he is physical in pass protection. That’s a big deal in the NFL — that durability that comes with it. As far as running the football in the scheme, they both can do it. One is just going to do it probably with a little bit more physicality and the other is going to make you miss.”Still, it’s clear that Scangarello recognizes Lindsay’s unique skillset.“One of the great things about coming to Denver that really excited me from the day I walked in the door is that there are a very few players in the league like Phillip that have the ability to win in a one-on-one matchup at any time,” Scangarello said. “I think that easiest matchup to create in the NFL is the halfback on a linebacker. That’s what we try to do in this offense a lot, and I think he has that gift and that ability and those traits. Excited to try to do that and try to force defenses to put a DB on him to open up other players.”Last year, Lindsay had 192 rushing attempts, but Freeman had 130. Still, Lindsay averaged 5.4 yards per attempt, while Freeman was held to 4.0. It remains to be seen how the touches will be divided in 2019, but it’s obvious that Scangarello has faith in both guys, even if he may have a little more in Lindsay. When you look at the head-to-head record of the Broncos against the Cardinals, you’ll see that with just one exception, Denver has owned the Arizona/St. Louis/Chicago team known for wearing red. That one loss? You can credit it to the tragic season of 2010, but not to often vilified clown, Josh McDaniels. Although, McDaniels started 2010 as head coach, just 6 days before the match-up at University of Phoenix stadium the Broncos deactivated his keycard and took away his headset. With McDaniels gone and Kyle Orton inexplicably ensconced as the starter of the 3-10 Denver Broncos, head coaching duties were handed to running backs coach, Eric Studesville. Tim Tebow was still marinating on the bench and the rushing attack was anchored by Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno. The 4-9 Arizona Cardinals weren’t having the greatest season themselves. This late-season game would be the first career start for their 3rd string quarterback, John Skelton. For all intents and purposes Womens Joe Flacco Jersey , this was one the Denver Broncos should have won. Instead, this one would go down as the first time in history the Cardinals beat the Denver Broncos. The Broncos took an early lead with a Steven Hauschka field goal (kicker Matt Prater didn’t play and would be placed on IR in the following weeks due to a nagging groin injury). Arizona answered with a Jay Feely field goal... but ol’ Jay was just getting warmed up. This is a game that I’m sure Feeley will never forget, because on this December day in Arizona, he would single-handedly beat the Denver Broncos. On a chip shot field goal attempt, Feely faked and ran 5-yards for the only touchdown of his career. He also kicked the extra point just moments later. It would be three more Jay Feely field goals before Denver could impotently respond with another Hauschka field goal. With just over 6:00 left in the 4th quarter and down 22-6, Cardinals running back Tim Hightower finally scored the game’s first offensive touchdown. After an exhausting day of getting their butt handed to them by a kicker, the Broncos got into the end zone on 1-yard Knowshon Moreno plunge. Time was running down and the Cardinals already had the game in-hand, but the juggernaut that was the 2010 Arizona Cardinals would not be stopped! Tim Hightower ripped off a 35-yard touchdown run with 3:00 to go in the 4th. Then, typical of the 2010 Denver Broncos, they couldn’t get out of their own way and just take the loss they had earned. To really demonstrate just how awful the team was, a Kyle Orton pass intended for Lance Ball was intercepted and returned 39-yards before being knocked loose by Ball, only to have Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett recover and carry it the rest of the way for Arizona’s final touchdown (Jay Feely kicked the extra point). Final score, 43-13, Cardinals. This was the only time in Broncos history Denver has lost to the Cardinals. Jay Feely scored 22. Receivers Eric Decker and Eddie Royal fumbled, but the truly remarkable bit of trivia that came out of this game was Kyle Orton’s stat line. He threw 3 interceptions, was 19 of 41 attempts for just 166-yards, and lost a fumble. While I want to say that Thursday’s game against the Cardinals could never be as bad as that game back in 2010, I’m not convinced. There are too many parallels to ignore. Like Studesville, Vance Joseph won’t be retained in a head coaching capacity next year. Case Keenum, I would argue, is better than Orton, but their ability to score points and take command of a game are crushingly similar. Both the Cardinals and Broncos are reeling. Like the 2010 match-up, the Broncos should win with one, but they also should have beaten the Jets. There is a real chance that Denver could go out and allow the Cardinals to double their win total against the Broncos. Here’s hoping that doesn’t happen.
The departure of Kirk Cousins and the trade for Alex Smith this spring left most fans a bit bewildered. Some thought Alex’s leadership Dwayne Haskins Jersey White , intelligence and athleticism would be a better fit for Jay Gruden’s system, while others thought the 33 year old was too cautious and didn’t like to take shots downfield. So far in the early portion of the season, the Alex Smith experiment has been a bit up and down. He hasn’t made plays in some ugly losses, and he’s been a bit too careful with the football, and a tad bit gun-shy in the pocket, when he’s had the opportunity to further the lead or rally the troops during games. Below are a few videos I’d like to point out from the Panthers game where I feel Alex may have left some plays on the field. You’ll see my commentary below the video in the tweet. This first play is just an illustration of the RB and TE not being on the same page here. This could be because Bibbs has not been working with the first team offense for that long. This is just a late read by Alex, and a play where if he sees it sooner, he can put the ball on Reed and allow him some RAC.Doctson was open on this play against a cover 2 look. Smith waits too long and misses his target.Totally unacceptable, especially at this point on the field. Take what the defense gives you and put it in Hopkins’ hands. This is one of the plays that infuriated me the most during he game. Alex is looking right at Richardson. Pull the trigger! You have to understand coverage Wes Martin Jersey , and you must know where your checkdown is. A quick flip of the wrist, and this should be a first down. Wow, does Vernon Davis come open in the middle of the field! So, it appears Josh Doctson can get open...Alex needs to take a shot somewhere here. No whistle means this is a free play! This type of play is what Alex did well in KC. Misses a read here. ...And here’s what that play SHOULD have looked like! The passing game to this point has not hit on all cylinders. I don’t know if Alex is to blame, the receivers are not running the right routes, or the coaches are not calling plays to Smith’s strengths. Maybe it’s chemistry - with both Alex and his receivers and the offensive line. Do you think the Redskins are leaving a bit on the field in the passing game? ALLEN PARK Womens T. J. Watt Jersey , Mich. (AP) — Trey Flowers‘ 6-year old daughter has already experienced plenty of success during her father’s NFL career.“She’s been fortunate to be at three Super Bowls. She has known that her daddy played for the Patriots,” Flowers said. “I just kind of hinted it to her: ‘What if daddy is a Lion? Do you like lions?’ “Flowers’ daughter Skyler was apparently a bit skeptical, but the 25-year-old defensive end says her favorite color is blue. So that’s a start. The big question is whether there will be any more Super Bowls in Flowers’ future. The Detroit Lions have never been to one, but they can hope that the three free agents they introduced Thursday will bring them a step closer. The Lions introduced Flowers, cornerback Justin Coleman and tight end Jesse James at their practice facility on Thursday. Detroit needed an edge rusher like Flowers because the oft-injured Ziggy Ansah was on the open market after playing with the Lions on the franchise tag last year.Later Thursday, Detroit announced it had signed offensive lineman Oday Aboushi and safety Andrew Adams.Like a lot of Lions, Flowers and Coleman have ties to the New England Patriots. Flowers had a career-high 7 ½ sacks last season for the Super Bowl champions and 21 over the last three years in New England. The Patriots drafted him in the fourth round out of Arkansas in 2015.Flowers joins a defensive line that got a boost in the middle of last season when Detroit traded for tackle Damon Harrison . Flowers says he hopes he can blend in and be a good teammate.“I think that’s very important — a new guy coming in, to just kind of gain the trust from his teammates and things before he kind of just comes in and acts like he knows it all,” Flowers said.Coleman started his career in New England in 2015 JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey White , when Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia — the Lions’ current general manager and coach — worked for the Patriots. Coleman became a standout nickel cornerback over the last two seasons in Seattle.Coleman went to Brunswick High School in Georgia, the same school as Detroit cornerback Darius Slay and Lions defensive back Tracy Walker. Slay turned 28 in January. Coleman is 25 and Walker is 24.“I got a couple years with Darius. It was great playing with him,” Coleman said. “We never knew that we were both going to get to this point, but in high school he was one of the best players that was on the field. He kind of just motivated me to get on the field and play a lot more. He kind of helped me along the way, just being the leader that he is. I tried to just compete with him, just so I could get better myself.”The Lions were looking to upgrade their options at tight end a year after releasing Eric Ebron. James had 120 receptions for 1,189 yards and nine touchdowns in four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.“Offensively, I wasn’t used the way that I feel like I could be used here. I feel like my ceiling here is going to be much higher than it was in the past,” James said. “I feel like I’m coming here https://www.thesteelerslockerroom.com/authentic-juju-smith-schuster-jersey , I’m going to be a key part of this offense. In Pittsburgh, I was a key part, but I think my role here could be greater.”Although James is hopeful this move will be good for his career, he’s leaving his home state. He was born in Pennsylvania and went to Penn State.“It’s a hard place to leave,” James said. “I grew up in Pittsburgh. My dream was to be a Steeler. I got to do that for four years. Didn’t get the job done — never got to bring a Super Bowl to Pittsburgh — but my time there was a success. I’ve gotten a lot better, grew as a football player.”Aboushi spent the 2018 season with the Arizona Cardinals, playing in eight games and making six starts. He’s entering his sixth NFL season.Adams spent the 2018 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, playing in 13 games and making four starts. He played in two seasons for the New York Giants prior to that. he physically unable to perform list on Thursday and he took part in the team’s first practice of training camp. His brother probably will not be taking part in the first practice of Steelers camp. Linebacker T.J. Watt experienced some tightness in his hamstring during a conditioning run on Thursday and head coach Mike Tomlin announced he was placed on the PUP list ahead of Friday’s practice.“He may be on for a very short period of time,” Tomlin said T. J. Watt Jersey White , via the team’s website. “We are evaluating that as we speak. Again, he was able to complete the test, he just expressed some tightness there at the end, so we will do what is appropriate from that stand point.”While it doesn’t sound like there’s much concern about Watt’s long-term outlook, there’s little reason to push things with a player who is vital to the Pittsburgh defense.

ENGLEWOOD Joe Flacco Jersey , Colo. (AP) — Safety Darian Stewart is joining a crowded field of free agent safeties following his release Wednesday from the Denver Broncos, where he won a Super Bowl ring.A starter in Denver since 2015, Stewart was a part of the famed “No Fly Zone” secondary that also featured safety T.J. Ward and cornerbacks Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib. With Stewart’s departure, Harris is the only remaining member of that secondary that helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 three years ago.Stewart, who turns 31 in August, was due nearly $5 million in both 2019 and 2020.“Broncos country thank you all for the love you showed me and my family these past 4 years,” Stewart wrote on Instagram. “But it’s time for me to move on and I’m looking forward to the next chapter.”The nine-year pro said he felt he still had a lot of football left in him, but he’ll have some stiff competition on the open market that features safeties Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, Lamarcus Joyner, Tyrann Mathieu and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, among others.Undrafted out of South Carolina in 2010, Stewart spent four seasons with the Rams in St. Louis followed by one season in Baltimore, where he caught the eye of Gary Kubiak, who was the Ravens’ offensive coordinator in 2014. When Kubiak replaced John Fox as head coach in Denver, he encouraged general manager John Elway to sign Stewart.Stewart missed just three games in his four seasons in Denver, where he collected 250 total tackles, intercepted nine passes and broke up two dozen others, recovered four fumbles and registered one sack.In the 2015 playoffs, he had 11 tackles, a sack, an interception, three pass breakups and a forced fumble and he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2016.Elway called him Wednesday to inform him of his release. Broncos have taken a hit at tight end, fullback and linebacker - three key positions for the Broncos’ offensive and defensive schemes." It’s been the hardest thing, mentally, I’ve ever had to go through,” Butt said. “I put the work in every single day. This is what I want to do. I want to be out here more than anything in the world. This isn’t by choice that I’m sitting in the training room or that I’m dealing with these little hiccups here and there. It’s definitely not by choice.”But the third-year tight end added that he wasn’t going to complain.“I’m not going to feel sorry for myself,” he said. “I’ll just put my head down and work and get back out there.”Butt said he has used journal writing to help him focus on the task at hand - getting back to football.“Everyone that’s known me my whole life knows how much this game means to me. It’s really not an option. I’m not going to quit,” he said, adding that he doesn’t think about the injuries when he’s on the field. “If I feel good, I’m not worried about anything. I felt good today. I’m running routes, playing hard off my left leg. Also Bradley Chubb Jersey White , I’ve had two surgeries on my right [leg]. My right feels fine, my right feels great, so there’s no doubt I’m going to overcome this left one. It’s just taking a little bit more time than I’d like.” At fullback, a position not every team utilizes but one destined to be used by Scangarello, who came from the 49ers where fullback Kyle Juszczyk was a major part of the Niners game plan, the Broncos have one hope until Janovich can return - rookie George Aston.Fangio was non-committal on how likely it would be that Aston would make the roster, saying he still must prove he is “worthy of fulfilling that role” but did note Aston has been a nice surprise.“Yeah, he’s been a surprise guy coming as an undrafted free agent. There aren’t many fullbacks out there these days in college or pro football, so there’s not an abundance of them,” Fangio said Sunday. “I think he’s had a nice catch and run after the catch the other night. He’s got a chance.”That’s close to high praise from Fangio, and Aston realizes better than anybody that his job is still the same, whether he’s playing to make the practice squad or the final 53. In the meantime, he’ll take everything he has learned from Janovich and try to put it to good practice.“I’ve learned a lot,” Aston said about what he’s taken from Jano’s example and mentorship. “You get to this level, a lot of college ball and a lot of football up to this point, you think you know a lot about football, but just in a couple of weeks you learn so much about things you had no idea about. He’s been more than amazing to me. Any questions I have, he’s right there helping me out with anything I need. It’s been pretty cool.” On the defensive side of things, a pec injury to reserve inside linebacker Joe Jones makes him the third linebacker alongside Todd Davis and Josey Jewell to be sidelined. Jewell was practicing again Sunday, but Alexander Johnson, Josh Watson, Keishawn Bierria and Joe Dineen Jr. are going to need to step up while Davis continues recovery from a calf injury.Justin Hollins, who is currently learning/playing both inside and outside linebacker, could also help out.“I’ve seen good progression in that he’s learning two positions, which is hard. He’s shown that he can run and he’s got some athletic abilities, long and all that,” Fangio said. “He’s just got to develop the love of hitting people like linebackers in this league have to have.”Also helping matters at linebacker is the fact that safety Jamal Carter asked to switch to linebacker, likely looking at his chances of making the defensive back roster and figuring he could help out at a position in need of some strength.“I’ve been wanting to play this since high school and college,” Carter said Sunday after practice. “I like being in the trenches. I’m a physical specimen. I don’t like being too deep away from arms and contact. It’s going to fit me.”Fangio is still at wait-and-see mode but he’s giving Carter the shot he asked for.Right now, it’s temporary, but if he looks good in there it will be permanent,” the coach said. “Our numbers have gotten low there, and he’s always wanted to play in there, so the timing was good. He wants to be in there.”Horse TracksBroncos Day 15 camp report: George Aston's plate is fullAs the only healthy fullback on the roster, he will be busy with the offense during its team periods. Washington has chronically mishandled the Trent Williams dispute. Which is no surprise Montez Sweat Jersey , because in recent years Washington chronically has chronically mishandled problems like this — as discussed earlier today on .At to Williams, one man is trying to fix it. Even if he’s apparently going it alone.Offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell appeared Thursday on 106.7 The Fan, and he made an open plea for Williams to come back.“There’s no doubt if, Trent, you’re out there and you’re listening, man, we’d love to have you back as soon as possible,” O’Connell said. That’s an appropriate senitment, but what has the team actually done to make Williams feel wanted? When Adrian Peterson was ambivalent about playing for the Vikings in 2015, coach Mike Zimmer and G.M. Rick Spielman went to Houston to make an in-person plea to get Williams to play. There’s been no report or suggestion that Washington has done anything like that with Williams — and if they had, surely someone would have leaked it in order to make it look like the team has tried to get him back.At this point, with so many hard feelings between Williams and the team and no apparent effort by the team to undo whatever damage was done to make Williams feel the way that he feels about the team, all O’Connell can do is talk.“There’s no denying that and every Redskin fan out there knows that he’s an elite player Dwayne Haskins Redskins Jersey ,” O’Connell said. “Obviously, nobody wants him back more than me. I’m right up there with every other guy walking in the halls of this building right now, we want him back badly.”O’Connell seems to realize that isn’t happening, and that Plan B is now Plan A.“[W]e feel good about the depth that we have over there on that left side,” O’Connell said. “It’s still sorting itself out, both at the guard position and the tackle position.”One thing that likely won’t be sorting itself out is the confrontation with Williams. With Williams apparently determined not to play for Washington and Washington apparently determined not to do anything other than wait him out, the chances of Williams walking through the front door of the facility remain very slim, at best. It happened in Tokyo, Japan and one rookie by the name of Terrell Davis went from roster bubble to fast track to starter in one special teams play.Broncos podcastsIn this weeks’ MHR Radio podcast, Ian St. Clair and Adam Malnati talk about Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco and how there is good reason to be excited about him leading the team in 2019.In this weeks’ Broncos & Bratwurst, Kevin Gillikin reviewed the Broncos 22-14 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in their second preseason game. He saw baby steps in the way of progress from the team. The Something Something Broncos podcast talked about the tight end position, but Jess Place also ranted to Tim Lynch and Laurie Lattimore-Volkmann about the Broncos mobile ticketing system - which might be of greater interest for fans heading into this season.<hr class="p-entry-hr" id="GvOlFl">Social Media InformationMHR Facebook Page: Mile High Report: A Denver Broncos BlogMHR Twitter: Follow @MileHighReportMHR Instagram: Follow @MileHighReportMHR Twitch: Follow @MHR_LiveDenver Broncos Fan Group: Denver Broncos FootballBroncos 2019 preseason scheduleDateOpponentInfoDateOpponentInfoBroncos 2019 regular season scheduleWkDateOpponentTime (MT)TVWkDateOpponentTime (MT) Broncos that left tackle Garett Bolles had more tackles than Von Miller.Three times, Bolles was beaten by Terrell Suggs and rather than give up another sack, he simply tackled the Ravens' ageless pass rusher who still managed 1陆 sacks, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble in a 27-14 win over the Broncos (2-1).Bolles was whistled for two costly holding penalties, one erasing a 39-yard catch by Demaryius Thomas and another at the Baltimore 5-yard line that preceded Case Keenum's fifth interception so far.Miller was held in check with just two tackles. After declaring on Friday that "last year's team is dead and gone," coach Vance Joseph's remodeled bunch hit the road for the first time and promptly bared many of those same flaws that led to their downfall in 2017.Poor protection.Predictable defense.Dubious decisions.Bad discipline. The Broncos' 13 penalties marked the most by Denver since Week 8 at Philadelphia last season and their 120 yards were the most in 41 games, since a Week 15 loss at Pittsburgh in 2015."After watching the film two or three times Womens Noah Fant Jersey , it was a lot of self-inflicted wounds," Joseph said Monday, noting that he didn't have a problem with the calls that included an ejection of rookie running back Phillip Lindsay for throwing a punch in the pile."I couldn't see if he threw a punch or not," Joseph said. "But I saw him dive into the pile, which is illegal."Joseph said the Broncos, who host unbeaten Kansas City (3-0) next Monday night, "have to own the penalties."That includes the one that referee Ronald Torbert inadvertently blamed on Broncos tackle Billy Turner — who wasn't even on the field — for a block-in-the-back foul that negated Chris Harris Jr.'s TD return of a blocked field goal try.The foul was actually on nose tackle Domata Peko some 20 yards behind Harris."I've got to be smarter. Next time that happens, just don't even run, just stop and let them go," Peko said. "But I was just hustling, doing what I'm taught to do and finishing the play, running down and just trying to get a block, man."But it seems like the way the league is going now you can't really hit people the way you want to anymore, and so I've just got to be smarter."Even though it was on the wrong player, Joseph said, "it was a good call."What wasn't, by his own admission, was Joseph's decision to burn two timeouts late in the first half so Denver could get the ball back at their 15 with under a minute left in a steady rain.Another three-and-out by the Broncos and another short punt by Marquette King set up the Ravens for a last-second field goal and a 20-14 halftime lead."That's totally on me," Joseph said.A week after criticizing Joe Woods' defensive game plan for having his cornerbacks give too much cushion to Oakland's receivers, Joseph watched his defense do the very same thing at Baltimore."We stopped the run again. They averaged 2.8 yards a carry, but the passing game obviously gave us problems," Joseph said. "We've got to challenge more at the corner position and make more plays. If teams want to throw the ball that quick, we have to play closer in coverage and make some plays early. That way our pass rush can get there."But it's a blueprint on tape right now the last three weeks: throw it quick, challenge the DBs and keep Von Miller and (first-round draft pick Bradley) Chubb at bay by throwing it quick."A frustrated Harris said Denver's defense needs to better camouflage its intentions so quarterbacks like Joe Flacco can't pick them apart: "We've got to disguise better as a team. Try to confuse them. Try not to give them easy looks."Joseph concurred, saying, "We can help those guys with more looks and more coverage packages."Despite a blocked punt and a blocked field goal, the special teams didn't escape Joseph's aggravation."As a punt unit we were not very good," Joseph said. "We gave them the ball twice at midfield. We gave them the ball once after a return and a sideline penalty on (rookie cornerback) Isaac Yiadom, who wasn't even in the game."Yiadom would soon go in, replacing Tramaine Brock (groin), who was subbing for Adam Jones (thigh). Both are expected back at practice Wednesday, Joseph said.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Josh Dobbs did all the right things last summer Womens Jerome Bettis Jersey , or at least enough of them for the Pittsburgh Steelers to cut veteran backup quarterback Landry Jones at the end of the preseason and promote Dobbs to the spot behind Ben Roethlisberger.Nine months later, none of it matters.Whatever gap Dobbs created over then-rookie Mason Rudolph in 2018 is gone. It’s not an indictment of the ever-meticulous Dobbs so much as a return to the way the Steelers prefer to do business. When Dobbs and Rudolph report to training camp at Saint Vincent College next month with 88 of their teammates, they’ll once again be in a fight for the opportunity to be the first option off the bench.“They understand it is competition and it’s open,” offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner said Wednesday. “But to me, that position is always going to be open no matter who is here. That battle is every single day trying to put us in the best position when if Ben is not in the game, that we have put the right guy in to give us a chance to win the game.”Even if those chances will be focused entirely on the short term.Roethlisberger signed a new contract in April that runs through 2021. Great news for the Steelers, not so much for the two players taken a year apart in the draft — Dobbs in the fourth round in 2017, Rudolph in the third round in 2018 — who saw any real shot at becoming an NFL starter blocked indefinitely, at least as long as they play in Pittsburgh. Dobbs’ deal expires after 2020 and Roethlisberger’s extension coincides with the entirety of Rudolph’s rookie pact. Not that Rudolph is particularly interested in trying to big picture things.“I’m not talking about contracts,” Rudolph said with a respectful shrug. “That’s what it is. Football Jerome Bettis Jersey , you’re either one play away, two plays away sometimes so you’ve got to be ready to go and you’ve got to prepare like you are the starter.”Something Rudolph looks a bit more like this spring than last. The tentativeness that nagged at him as he tried to absorb Fichtner’s playbook has vanished. The former Oklahoma State star has looked far more confident with the ball in his hands and the uncertainty in his voice while barking out signals is gone. Even the guy Rudolph tongue-in-cheek referred to as “Mr. Roethlisberger” has noticed.“They are more comfortable, especially Mason,” Roethlisberger said. “The first year your head is kind of spinning a little bit. You see him settling into it a lot. And he’s not afraid to step to whatever group, whatever receiver. In the past, he might have felt hesitancy to throw to certain guys.”Maybe because Rudolph understands snaps are precious. There weren’t many to go around for him once the regular season started last fall save for the occasional work on Wednesdays while Roethlisberger watched from the sideline as part of a scheduled day off. Rudolph knew it was coming. That didn’t make the adjustment any easier. His goal is to not let it happen again. If there was a silver lining — at least for Rudolph — in the team’s failure to reach the playoffs, it was the opportunity to do a deep dive into Fichtner’s system.“I can get kind of into a little bit of a nerd mentality at times in the offseason,” Rudolph said. “It’s fun. It was fun studying. Back here ready to go and put it on display.”Rudolph isn’t the only one in the quarterback room that’s a self-professed nerd. Until he unseated Jones last summer, Dobbs was a bit of a curiosity, as well known for his degree in aerospace engineering as his ability to throw a football. He excelled during an extended audition in the preseason — passing for 434 yards and four touchdowns — and suddenly found himself as the primary backup.Dobbs threw meaningful passes in two games James Conner Jersey , completing a 22-yarder with the team deep it its own end against Baltimore in early November then went 4 for 9 for 24 yards and an interception on the road in Oakland after Roethlisberger exited with a rib injury. While Dobbs feels he did enough to remain second on the depth chart, he’s not exactly pouting. He’s watched Rudolph’s progress over the past 12 months. Dobbs knows if he doesn’t continue to improve, he’ll find himself falling behind or maybe even looking for work come early September. That’s why getting worked up over the potential ripple effects of Roethlisberger’s contract is useless. There’s so much to focus on right now, wondering what his career might look like in two years is pointless.“I want to compete, I want to be the best, I want to find a way to make it better,” Dobbs said. “Whatever it is, I’m trying to build the next fighter jet or I’m trying to be the starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers or if it’s dodgeball. I want to be the best dodgeball player out there and if I’m not, I want to figure out how can I get there.” Mike Tomlin has said more than once this season he wasn’t going to talk about Le'Veon Bell, that he was tired of answering questions about the holdout running back. So on Tuesday https://www.thesteelerslockerroom.com/authentic-terrell-edmunds-jersey , the Steelers coach didn’t answer.“Any other questions?” via Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.Talk all season was whether the Steelers might trade Bell to get what they could for the star running back, who is scheduled to hit free agency in March. To facilitate a trade, Bell had to report and sign his franchise tag before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline. He didn’t, so the Steelers couldn’t. Bell remains a no-show, unhappy that the Steelers applied the franchise tag for the second consecutive year.He can remain absent only for two more weeks to A.) Play this season; and B.) Remain eligible for free agency in 2019.The Steelers could rescind the tag, allowing him immediately to become a free agent, but Bouchette said Pittsburgh doesn’t want to risk him signing with an AFC competitor like the Ravens or Patriots.Bell is losing $855,000 per week in his holdout.
